It can take years to get the recipe just right. Thirteen-year-old Lucas Hobbs has a head start. He's already figured out the secret ingredient to a happy life.
Hobbs knows what it's like to lean on others for help.
"When I was at the hospital, people, like our neighbors and stuff, would bring us food," Lucas said.
In January, he was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma.
"He went through chemotherapy, radiation ... it was really tough," his father said.
When the Make-A-Wish Foundation approached Hobbs, the young teenager knew right away he wanted to work in a food truck.
"I love good food. My dad calls me a foodie!" he said.
Hobbs could have wished for anything but he decided to give back by serving hundreds of hungry people at St. Paul's Dorothy Day Center; the final stop on a six-stop tour to feed the community that took care of him when he was in need.
"That's joy to my heart," Lucas said.
"He made my day," said Luz Moreno as she grabbed a burrito from the truck outside the center. "I'm happy. I'm going to be happy the whole day. That little boy has got a big heart."
After months of tough treatments, Lucas is now in remission.
He says when he grows up he either wants to be a chef or a police officer. Either way, he says he will always continue to help others.
"I am an American fighting man. I serve in the forces guarding our country and our way of life. I am prepared to give my life in their defense." |
Love your home page!
Dang. Great kid, and a great story, but it made my screen kinda blurry...
One of those stories that need posting, even with wet fingers.
God Bless him. He survived.
