A fire has engulfed the Hollywood Hills home of Johnny Mathis - causing extensive damage and leaving the singer with only a few mementos. The 80-year-old had just flown back to Los Angeles from Cleveland, where he had been performing, to learn that his home of 56 years had caught fire on Monday afternoon. Pictures from above the house reveal parts of the roof had caved in, and Mathis told reporters at the scene that the blaze had caused extensive damage, and that only a few things had been saved. Shock: Johnny Mathis had only just flown back into Los Angeles when he was told his home had caught fire Destruction: The 80-year-old singer told reporters that only a few mementos were spared from the flames 'I'm OK, nobody got hurt -- that's always important. We can always replace things,' Mathis said The singer, known for hits like Chances Are, It's Not For Me To Say and Too Much, Too Little, Too Late, told KTLA5: 'Someone said there was a fire at the house. I was thinking maybe a little fire The cause of the fire was under investigation Brian Humphrey, a spokesman for the city's fire department, said a vegetation fire spread to the mansion According to the Los Angeles Times, the home caught fire shortly after 5.30pm, and was put out in about half an hour by more than 40 firefighters. I loved Mathis songs back in the day. Very romantic. Sad to see his historical mementos destroyed.

A shame. But really he probably should have given them to a museum way before the fire. Still horrible for an 80 year old. I am sure he is shaken up by it.

I’m really sorry to read this. I can’t imagine the pain of loosing your home of 56 years. Glad that nobody was injured.

I would have cut back the vegetation, whether it’s legal or not.

Some years back, somewhere in California, homeowners received letters from the state of California and from a federal agency.

One letter said NOT to cut the brush near their home because of the endangered kangaroo rat. The other letter said it was OK to cut the brush. Only one homeowner cut back the brush. The others did not.

Eventually, there was a brush fire, and every home was destroyed except one...the guy who cut back the brush.

I was upset when I heard the news about the home of Johnny Mathis.

One of the things I have hung on to through countless moves and many years are all my old 78’s from high school and college of all of his music. Obviously I share your love of his music. Wish there were some so-called artists of today that could sing like he did.

Great voice, terrific singer and you have never heard any drugs or drinking scandals about this guy. He looks wonderful for his age, really unbelievable. I hope he is able to weather this storm.

When we lived in Northern CA,local firefighters told us they always try to save the house whose owners made the effort to cut back brush. We always did this.

"You don't even he[a]r about his homosexuality..."

Except now that you bring it up. The man just lost his home of almost 60 years and a lifetime of keepsakes from a fire. Was that even necessary to mention?
