I saw a low information denizen the other day about 8 months or so and smoking a cigarette while drinking a 44 oz. soda. I had to fight hard to hold my tongue.

I suppose drugs, whether prescribed or illegal, are fine. They cause absolutely no ill effect on the fetus.
Alcohol is the ONLY bad substance. drugs are good.
My mother drank when pregnant with me but only wine. That’s what women did back then.
Calling BS. Not that I think women should drink a lot during pregnancy. I’ve been pregnant and around lots of pregnant women here and in Europe. Here, the docs tell you to not imbibe one drop of alcohol. They never say one word about eating chemical fake sweeteners which are clear neurotoxins. Not one doctor says to not drink diet sodas.
In Europe those brain poisons are not allowed, and a pregnant woman is told to only have a bit of wine with dinner. Wine has been drunk even by pregnant people for millennia. Most pregnant women don’t want alcohol much anyway. They crave protein. Certainly drinking a bit of alcohol only with dinner during pregnancy won’t hurt your baby.
If they hadn’t drank so much, maybe they wouldn’t have gotten pregnant in the first place.
A half a beer or a small glass of wine should not be a problem.
The bigger problem is a continuous diet of high salt fast food diet with minimal protein.
Wrong. The report doesn't "prove" anything. It just shows a consensus of pediatricians say they don't have proof about small amounts of alcohol, but hey, better safe than sorry, so we recommend none. Prudent, but not proof.
Any chemical you take into your body affects your unborn child, but I’d humbly submit that a glass of wine with dinner or a beer after work is not going to harm your child.
And probably all of our parents (if you’re over 40) smoked like chimneys and we somehow managed to survive.
Note that they don’t seem to mention pot, which is much more powerful but is politically correct.
I wonder if the conclusion was decided prior to the study? I don’t really find AAP a totally trustworthy group anymore. Common sense tells me we would be seeing a lot more damage from fetal alcohol in those populations whose moms were pregnant during eras when drinking in moderation was not frowned upon or outright forbidden.

What did they drink back in the day when beer or wine was the only safe thing to drink?!? Most civilizations relied on weak forms of beer rather than water.
While pregnant I went to 3 Dodgers’ games and had 1 beer at each.
A sister-in-law of mine was a flat out drunk, just could not leave the stuff alone. Stayed totally plastered during a pregnancy, lost the kid. Just kept on sucking up the devil’s juice, only she showed extreme hatred and contempt for just about everyone. She never visits the kids grave. Just sad.
She quit drinking about 30 years after losing the child, got religion and still hates people.
The debate is over? Try telling that to a professional alcoholic. They will argue with you all day long.

That statement does not say anything about quantity. Show me the study that proves a couple drinks while pregnant has an effect... Oh there isn’t one? So the premise of this piece is pure extrapolation and supposition. Might as well say XYZ is bad for you so NO AMOUNT of it is safe. Which is flat out false for most things.
The study should concentrate on how much alcohol does it take to get a woman pregnant....
