A 75-year-old veteran used his Army knife-fight training to stop a man armed with two hunting knives from going after a roomful of children Tuesday at an Illinois public library, the Pekin Daily Times reports.
Sixteen children were getting a chess lesson from James Vernon in a room at the library when 19-year-old Dustin Brown allegedly came in with a hunting knife in each hand screaming that he was going to kill people. Vernon tells the Washington Post that one thought went through his mind: This cant happen here and Im not going to let it happen. These kids are my responsibility right now.

Bravo!
It’s nice to have a happy ending once in a while.
Kudos to Vets.....and that means *you too* Mr. Rob ;D
Each and every *homeschool* advocate on FR should read this thread.
Jes sayin’ b/c they are the first to say *homeschool your kid* any time there is a dust-up in a PS involving education quality and/or crime.
We are no longer *safe* anywhere we go.
Bless Mr. Vernon, and bless you too Daffy for finding and posting this and all your beautiful pictures you always post..
Hope the hero heals quickly.
>>> The library neglected to post a Knife Free Zone sign.
No, no, no, silly Daffy!
They should make *murder* illegal. That will surely do the trick! No matter the weapon, see?
How can we add a kitteh to the kudos ...or a Black Lab...I dunno.
I failed my mission to kill everyone, Brown reportedly told police after his arrest.
Police also say Brown, who was out on bail in connection with child pornography charges, admitted to specifically targeting the children. Hes been charged with attempted murder.
Definitely agree.
Fine line between carrying and using.
Sometimes you hear of a cop opening fire and hitting 3 or 4 innocent bystanders - and that just because someone didn’t say ‘yes sir’ to him.
I, as a conscientious carrier would NEVER fire into a crowd UNLESS someone was firing out of the crowd and hitting people.
Then I would be reluctant.
I am on the road a lot and carry whether or not one is supposed to - where my travels take me local I don’t need it but it seems where you do need it, you can’t have it. That has to be more than a coincidence.
Mind you, when I said ‘I am drawn to the fire or gunfire’ doesn’t necessarily mean I will do anything when I get there, that remains to be seen at the scene. BUT I do know I am not going to arbitrarily run away.
I still do some deliveries at banks and when I take time to ‘talk’ to the manager I do let him(them) know that I am armed and if something happens and I ‘seemingly’ have a ‘heart attack’ and am rolling on the floor - crying or sobbing or whatever’ that I am merely trying to get in a good position and get my hands where they need to be.
At least that is the plan. DEFINITELY need a prospective plan - if you are going to carry.
Yes, fight back. When I was at Domino’s, a couple of big ol’ football player types thought it would be fun to jump the pizza guy. They got more of a fight than they expected. Yes, I ended up with two cracked ribs, a broken wrist and 30 staples in my head, but that wasn’t MY blood on the back of my car.
I love labs. That’s why I love the LL Bean catalog. They always have Labradors in there.
No Soylent Green....we want y’all around for your knife fighting skills.
Meanwhile the leftist media has been in an uproar for 2-1/2 weeks over Ben Carson suggesting he would attempt the same sort of thing if faced with a lunatic wanting to kill everyone in the room.
Will the homescrewlers now demand the obliteration of public libraries, or maybe they will demand that chess no longer be taught.
Quit generalizing about bashing the VA. My wife are both veterans and get great care from the VA. It’s not all as bad as the media makes it out to be.
Thank you for the appropo admonishment. I pray for Vets and all who serve/d. All deserve the very best in care.
And thank you for your service. Thank you.
Only once, did I have to use my CC for self-defense. That nagging thought ...*can I really do it* flies out the window when it’s him or me.
Stay safe. Carry on!
