Five months after the Catholic diocese of Richmond fired John Murphy from his high-level job at a Catholic assisted-living center because he was in a homosexual marriage, the 63-year-old Virginia man has filed a discrimination claim with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.
And supporters of traditional marriage are watching Murphys complaint closely.
Its a groundbreaking complaint, says Travis Weber, director of the Family Research Councils Center for Religious Liberty. Its significant for several reasons.
Among those reasons is that the legal game has changed radically since the diocese fired Murphy in early April, a week after he began his position as executive director of St. Francis Home.
In June, the Supreme Courts Obergefell decision created a constitutional right to homosexual marriage. And in July, the EEOC, the federal body that adjudicates federal employment discrimination laws, expanded the Civil Rights Acts Title VII prohibited grounds for discrimination to include sexual orientation and gender identity.
That makes Murphys case unique says his lawyer Aubrey Ford. Im not aware of any court that has ruled on these issues since both of those happened.
Murphy, who variously describes himself as a lifelong and cafeteria Catholic, told LifeSiteNews that in 2008 he married Jerry Carter, his homosexual partner of almost 30 years, but did not disclose this information to the board of the St. Francis Home during the hiring process.

He is fighting a lost cause. He will lose this is settled law. He is considered a moral leader and must abide by the rules of the organization.
In a sane world we would say he was fired before the Godless new standards went into effect. However...
See this is why the Right compromising won't stop the left from destroying the Right.
He was fired within a week for lying.
Kaching alert!
He says he was hired to be “the face of the operation” but did not disclose his status. I think he loses there by his own words.
Can’t wait to see him try this with a Muslim organization.
