Legendary and Warner Bros. Pictures—the studios behind 2014’s smash hit Godzilla—will reunite for a giant monster franchise that will culminate in a dream smackdown between Godzilla and King Kong.

Superfans might note that the news isn’t exactly new: Godzilla was released with an agreement for its sequel, Godzilla 2, on June 8, 2018. The dual franchise’s combination sparked hopes for a meetup between Godzilla and King Kong, which was announced Wednesday for a film that will be called Godzilla vs. Kong, coming to theaters in 2020.

GO GO GO GODZILLA!!! When I was a kid watching the various Toho movies on stations like WOR in NYC on weekends or after school I was rooting for Godzilla to take down King Kong.

I saw this on Bob Wilkins when I was a kid.

King Kong vs Godzilla.

I forget who won. I think it was a tie.

I’m not watching it unless it’s in black and white and Japanese.

Kong will be dwarfed by Godzilla.

Not a fair match.

Someone call OSHA!

It’ll be a kaiju version of Batman v. Superman. They’ll fight each other early on, but then team up against a common foe.

With a purposeful grimace and a terrible sound
He pulls the spitting high tension wires down

Helpless people on a subway train
Scream bug-eyed as he looks in on them

He picks up a bus and he throws it back down
As he wades through the buildings toward the center of town

Oh no, they say he’s got to go go go Godzilla
Oh no, there goes Tokyo go go Godzilla

History shows again and again
How nature points up the folly of men

“I was rooting for Godzilla to take down King Kong.”

Why were you rooting for the foreigner?

Seriously, as I understand it, they originally shot 2 endings for king kong vs godzilla. One in which king kong wins, for the american market. And the other where godzilla wins for the japan market.

Both King Kong and Godzilla have been around for a long time. They’ll probably have to use stunt doubles for some of the more physical scenes. Neither one can climb buildings, toss around boulders, or pick up train cars like they could in their younger days.

I lived in California for about a year when I was 13, about 45 years ago.

Until recently I had racked my brain trying to remember the monster movie host and his catchy theme song. Finally the name Bob Wilkins came to mind and the internet did the rest.

Everyone else would be asleep Sat at 11 and I had to push myself to stay awake that late. Those were some of the most awful, cheap, weird monster movies I’ve ever seen. I was in awe.

Y’know, Godzilla is a LOT bigger than Kong and has Atomic Death Breath to boot. If this battle was actually done “in scale” it would be a very short fight.
Sort of along the lines of Bambi vs. Godzilla:

In the King Kong movies, Kong was scaled to be around 25 feet tall, and was vulnerable to .30 cal machinegun fire from biplanes.

Godzilla, in the movies, was generally scaled as being about 100 meters tall. He could step on Kong and squish him like a bug. Godzilla was also invulnerable to repeated tank fire and artillery in all the movies.
