Perhaps they can all go to work for CGI?

Creating actual jobs, may be a better approach. Not a herd of the unprepared, demanding positions that do not exist.... More taxes for the new coding labs.

I hear tell you can’t code if you can’t read. Or write. Or spell. GFL, though, Ream Manual...

I can get coders from India, Philippines, etc. that will work for 3$ an hour AND are college educated and polite to boot. Coding is the wrong level. We need startups, big ideas, not grunt work.

You are correct, but I’d add he also needs to instill a work ethos that understands that any honest work is good and at 18 the average workweek is well above 40 hours. There is no reason not to be working nights and/or weekends.

There are only 10 types of people in the world. Those that understand binary and those that don’t.

The unionized public school teachers can’t teach the 3 r’s so sure, add coding to the curriculum.

So what language does Rahmbo code in?

Besides graft and corruption?

It’s actually not a bad idea. Even knowing just a little bit about code can make you a much better computer user. Learning the core logic of how software is put together makes it easier to understand and use any software package. Plus of course a lot of the stuff one will have to use in professional life (office apps) have some sort of macro language, having the confidence to actually work with those makes you an instant super user and very useful to the people paying you. Computers work better as a white box, learn some coding.

I've been an engineer for 28 years, and have been programming computers for 34 years.

Even so, this is a BAD IDEA. Most people do not have the aptitude for computer programming. Perhaps only 30% of the population does. Forcing the other 70% to endure that is wrong.

Let every individual do what he or she is best at, or what is needed in their own communities.

Sure. And make sure to inflate grades for those who don’t have the capacity to learn. Can’t make them feel bad about their failure.

My 12 year old is dying to learn more coding. I wish it was in schools. He has been “hacking” since he was 7, thrown out of the kiddie online game Toontown twice for it (I admit to being proud) before age 10. Now he wants to learn Python.

I don’t know why Rahm is going for it. He should include marksmanship as well: maybe less innocent bystanders would get shot each weekend in Chicago.

That’s about the most stupid idea Rahm’s come up with yet. How about teaching them to read, write and do arithmetic?

65.4 percent

The district serves 400,000 students. Students attend a particular school based on their area of residence except for charter schools and selective enrollment schools. The school system reported a graduation rate of 65.4 percent for the 2012–2013 school year.

Why, without going to link, am I not thinking computer language coding... but HEALTHSCARE INSURANCE CODE coding? We live in a culture dominated by 4 industries. 1) Government, 2)HealthScare (government), 3) Services, and 4)[in]Security.
