Well, it’s already 0800 where I live. If you were here you’d have it already!

Forgive my obvious obtuseness but ... why ?

What is so demanding of a cell phone ?

What do you guys do that gives this possession such a high priority ?

This may sound like an asshole question, but ... I'm a dinosaur with a flip TELEPHONE ...

"What ... milk and bread ?

K ... I love you"

Used to be, cell phones were only used for the milk and bread thing that you mention.

These days though I use mine all the time.

“Let’s see... what’s the weather where I’m going?... ok, I’ll bring a jacket.”

“Oh, I just got a crucial e-mail instead of having to wait for me to get home to handle it.”

“I’ve lost 25 lbs using this new app on my phone to track my calories and the number of steps I’ve taken.”

I used to be like you, only use the phone to talk, and so was my aunt. I bought her a 5s, I have a 6, and neither one of us could ever go back to how things once were lol.

I have a similar question. What’s so great about this one verses the last?

Does it do holograms? Does it really read minds? Does it have a stun and death ray setting?

Exactly! My phone is now almost my primary computer. I accomplish more work on it than on my laptop or desktop now. Last year my elder brother bet me a Benjamin that I could not stay off my computer for one week. During that week I discovered just how powerful my phones were, and donated the Benjamin to FR. :^)

Which raises more than one question from me ...

"Doing work", to me .. whether on a desktop, laptop or whatever electronic device always means some kind of keyboarding

Again ... to me ...

how do you "do work" using a device the size of a Cliff Notes cheater ?

I'm soon to be 68, a little slower than last year, a litle blinder (etc), and I have never been comfortable without a mouse

I've tried ... really I have ... but I cannot train my brain to use my fingers for scrolling, clicking, etc.

Am I relagated to the obsolete bench just because ?

It’s far more than “just a phone” to the point that making calls is one of the least-used features now. And yes, using all that functionality crammed into “the size of a Cliff Notes cheater” does require a different/new user interface.

The iPhone 6s has about the same power as a MacBook notebook computer, same processing speed and same onboard storage. As such, the mere pocket “phone” has expanded to web browser, game console, video phone, and a thousand other uses including handling “enterprise data”. My business lets users access sophisticated corporate data from a range of mobile devices, getting “real work” done from inventory management to medical bedside prescription ordering to on-site travel logging to ... .

Input has been adapted to extensive use of direct touch (so no need for a mouse), touch-based on-screen keyboard (no need for a physical keyboard), and (for you, possibly mind-blowing) “swipe” style keyboard input where rather than deliberately touching each key just sliding your finger from one to another (yes, touching other keys in the process) and they computer figures out what word you were most likely trying to type. Also voice input has grown tremendously, so you can literally talk to the thing.

And yes, these things are so much fun to use that people will delightedly stand in line for hours (or days!) waiting to buy the first of new models. I had the joy of getting the original iPad just 30 minutes after it was released, and now programming iPads & iPhones is my career. Imagine a “car nut” from years past getting all excited about the latest muscle car about to be released from their favorite manufacturer; same idea now, with “mental muscle computers” being released with new & exciting capabilities.

Without revealing too much about my work I can say that it consists of lots of email, surfing and monitoring of network traffic.

You are correct about keyboarding. However after a steep learning curve and new software (SwiftKey) I am able to type as fast as I do on a regular board. (Which is hunt&peck at 35 wpm)

The new browsers allow acceptable viewing even on five inch screens. Anyways, I have to go, more later.

Keep trying. I am 61 years old and have used computers for five decades. I hated the trackpads on laptop back in the day and always used a trackball (I hate mice). Then a decade ago I bought a laptop but always used a trackball that I had to always carry around with the computer. On a trip to India I lost the trackball and could find no replacement, and I was forced to use the trackpad on the laptop (Macbook Air). After one or three weeks, I figured it out and I love trackpads!!! Now I never use mice unless on someone else’s box...

Maybe. But when you have to do, it can do! It beats lugging around a notebook computer.
