This week we have double feature for your week end pleasure.
First up is a blatant Godzilla ripoff from South Korea called Yongary Monster from the deep. Yongary is a gasoline eating fire breathing giant reptile who wants to devour Seoul. Cheesy with poor special effects but lots of screaming girls and burning buildings. Yeah its really dumb but soooo much fun. It is, however; dubbed into English.
Yongary, Monster from the Deep
The second offering this week is a classic Kung Fu flick from Japan called "Zatoichi the Blind Swordsman." I think this was adapted by Hollywood into a Western but I may be wrong about that and can't remember the name of the Western but I think it stared Yul Brenner.
This a is pretty typical film of this type with impossible stunts and somewhat preachy moralistic heroes but with lots of head chopping fun. I was impressed with the camera work in this film which is better than a lot of the genre
As always, enjoy
I think you are right.
I sort of remembered that after I’d hit post
Nice Stills!
just curious, has anyone mentioned the Ultraman series?
Back in the early 80s on Saturdays after caartoons it was shown on tv after Godzilla...
This chip off the old block is the son of Godzilla.
He was born on Sogell Island, where his egg was cracked open prematurely by Kamacuras, a group of giant mutant praying mantis. Godzilla showed up, handled his business, and rescued Minilla. Godzilla then took to training Minilla to defend himself and probably how to destroy Tokyo, since thats the family business and all. It has never actually been specified if Godzilla is his biological parent, or if Minilla is just of the same species and Godzilla adopted him. His abilities include: breathing atomic smoke ringswhich are really just him trying to breathe fire. He shares a psychic connection with Godzilla, which allows the two to communicate over distances. Minilla is also the friendliest of all the Kaiju, as on multiple occasions he has come to the defense of humans, especially children.
I am a keen Zatoichi fan, I own EVERYTHING I have been able to find. All 26 of the films with Shintaro Katsu, as well as several years of the TV show. And the remakes. My film collection is about 99% martial arts stuff with my main interest being Japanese martial arts, samurai and all that.
I even have a t-shirt with Katsu on it :)
It may actually be time to starting working my way through all that again. This winter will be a Zatoichi-fest. My wife is going to be in the back room doing a LOT of knitting :)
Man, I'm too into this stuff.
Yes, that was it. I thought it was a pretty entertaining movie. Pure fantasy, but pretty entertaining.
