Apple unveiled a new iPad Pro and stylus on Wednesday, and professional artists are ecstatic.
The Apple Pencil is pressure sensitive. Press lightly, and the stroke gets thinner. Tilt the pencil, and the stroke gets thicker. Pair it with an iPad Pro, and there's finally an Apple (AAPL, Tech30) device to replace paper sketchbooks.
College students can balance this on a knee when doing sketches at an art museum. Comic book artists can finally work from the couch. Sure, electronic drawing pads already exist. But the best ones are bulky and stay at the desk. And until now, artists using iPads to draw were forced to buy a third-party stylus that was unreliable, with delayed reaction times between the stylus and screen and inaccurate drawing strokes.
David Macy is an artist at Adobe who tested the iPad-Pencil pairing sometime before this week's announcement. He told CNNMoney that he was impressed by the iPad's ability to quickly switch between programs, carrying files from one to another.
And the stylus-tablet communication is seamless, he said.

apple has now ‘innovated’ the pointy stick.

I guess it’s better then finger paints or crayons... the traditionally ‘approved’ mode of input for iPad people
I will be pre-ordering the iPad Pro as soon as it is offered. Larger size and stylus are the key reasons. My iPad II is two small and I already use a stylus. Getting a stylus that actually does more than draw a basic line will be fantastic!
The Wacom Cintiq has had this ability and more for about a decade.
Thank you. It's always good to get the ignorant comments from the know-nothing peanut gallery out of the way early in these threads.
Did you not even bother to read the article before you commented? The Wacom tablet and stylus solution is not as easy to use as you may think, nor is it as inexpensive.
You did know the Wacom's are just an input device for a computer, didn't you?
Are you trying to make people not like Apple?
Yes, those iPads will never catch on. By the way, how are things back in 1991?
How long has Samsung’s Note had a stylus? Yeah, its been years with the Note 1 even. Glad to see Apple finally saw the light, even with Samsung being ahead of the curve.
The Apple Newton was out long before, with a stylus. Apple was way, way ahead of Samsung.
This is a failure of Apple, according to Steve Jobs.
Professionals Will Find The $499 Microsoft Surface 3 More Useful Than The iPad Pro
Sep. 13, 2015 4:08 AM ET | About: Microsoft Corporation (MSFT), Includes: AAPL
Disclosure: I am/we are long MSFT, AAPL. (More...)
Summary
Apples decision to use an ARM-based processor for its iPad Pro product is a blessing for Microsoft.
Creative industry employees will continue to favor Surface tablets from Microsoft.
In the office environment, the entry-level Microsoft Surface 3 is more attractive than the $799 iPad Pro.
As someone still involved in the creative services industry, I opine that the $499 Surface 3 from Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) is the better productivity tool than the $799 iPad Pro from Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL). Even though the Surface 3 comes with a smaller 10.8-inch display (iPad Pro has 12.9 inches), its ability to run industry standard software makes it a clear winner.
The Atom-powered Surface 3 is already a proven decent gaming machine than runs most PC games at acceptable frame rates. The good performance and portability of the Surface 3 also makes it ideal for wider adoption in thebusiness, educational, and creative markets.
Aside from its competitive edge that it can run full versions of Microsoft Office 2013/Quicken, the basic Surface 3 model comes with a bigger 64GB internal storage, full size USB 3.0 port, and a microSD card slot for easy storage expansion.
The $799 iPad Pro doesn’t have expansion USB/microSD ports and only has 32GB of internal storage. Microsoft also sells the Surface pen for $50, while the Apple Pencil for the iPad Pro retails for $99.
Geeze, I can’t draw nothing with a regular pencil why would I want an apple one?
Wow, you really have a way with people. You really know how to make friends..... Nothing like a good first impression.
@@@@@@@@@@My comment is —Apple racks up another post Steve Jobs FAIL. The fault is not in the stars. It is that Steve Jobs is gone and Time Kook lacks that innovative gene. The unruly Cupertino mobsters FAIL to execute on design and innovation.
Apple no longer leads. The leaders are Samsung, LG, FoxCon, Microsoft with its multiple editions Surface

IS THE IPAD PRO REALLY A SURFACE PRO 3 AND SURFACE PRO 4 KILLER?
DARYL DEINO
The iPad Pro was announced on Wednesday and even though it doesnt run a desktop operating system like the Surface Pro 3 does (and the Surface Pro 4 will), there are some already saying it will hurt sales of Microsofts flaghip device. Vox believes Microsoft could be doomed.
But Apples strategy of scaling up smartphone software has a better chance of success than Microsofts traditional strategy of trying to scale down PC software.
Many could argue with Voxs article, especially given that Microsofts recent strategy of scaling down PC software with the Surface Pro 3 has been a great success. CNET wrote a similar article, but commenters after the article argued back.
iPad Pro is like the first Surface RT from years ago it runs a limited OS, has very small storage space of only 128 GB max, and minimal processor power. Surface Pro 3 (and the upcoming Pro 4) have full OS, larger storage space and MicroSD, very powerful i7 processor, lots of RAM, and ability to install millions of programs like any other Windows PC, wrote erasure 025.
The iPad Pro is overpriced by about $400. Its the equivalent of an upgraded Surface RT, and only diehard apple fanboys who dont care about bang for the buck will pony up retail price for it, loose_screw responded.
TechRadar isnt convinced that the iPad Pro is a better device than the Surface Pro.
Yet, despite all of the slates pro features, and the slew of software and accessories that were highlighted during the keynote, the iPad Pro fails to live up to its Pro moniker.
TechRadar notes that instead, the iPad Pro is just a super-sized version of the iPad Air that Apple keeps trying to push into the enterprise. They believe Apple should have made an OS X-powered tablet that addresses the needs of all types of power users.
There are many Twitter users who are underwhelmed with the iPad Pro announcement.

No, Steve said it was a failure if it NEEDED a stylus just for its basic functions. . . context is everything. The Apple Pencil is an accessory for specific purposes, and it is far beyond a 'dumb' stylus like you get on other devices.
Not at all, stem is an Anti-Apple Hate Brigade Troll. I was just welcoming him to the thread. He already doesn't like Apple. . . or couldn't you tell from the derision dripping from his comment?
If you are an incurable AppleBot then wait three months when people dump their iPad Pros on Craigs List along with their apple watches
