Hamptons
Old Los Angeles Restaurants ^ | March 24, 2012. | Mark Evanier

Hamptons (spelled with no apostrophe) was an upscale hamburger joint — perhaps the first one in Southern California. There were in fact two outlets of Hamptons. The original one was on Highland in Hollywood and in the spirit of full disclosure, it should be noted that the proprietor of this site was a part-owner of this one during its last few years of life. The other was out on Riverside Drive in Toluca Lake and it has now been transformed into Mo’s, with some but not all of the old Hamptons menu remaining.

Hamptons was famous as the restaurant that Paul Newman owned. That’s not exactly true but it’s also not utterly untrue. Here is how the story was told to me…

Hamptons is long gone, but fond memories of the restaurant and its extraordinary offerings in the Seventies and early Eighties remain.

My parents brought me there as a teenager as a reward for doing good in school. Biggest and best hamburger that I ever had. Now 1/2 lb hamburgers are fairly common, but back then Hampton’s was the premier fancy burger restaurant in L.A. Didn’t know about the Newman connection though.

Seems that the old time restaurants are pretty much closed and gone these days in most towns.

I used to order, and savor, the Hamburger au poivre at Hamptons.

Did you ever try it at the Bratskellar in Westwood, or was that before your time in 1977?

Did you ever try the Lemon Chicken at Fung Lum, Universal City, CA next to the Universal Studios? They built the complex with the restaurant sometime around 1982, IIRC, and I see it has already been demolished for redevelopment. This website says it was closed by 1998 and became derelict.
