SAT Scores Hit Four-Decade Low
Breitbart California ^ | 09/05/2015 | by Chriss W. Street

The most recent Census Bureau data reveals that of the $3.2 trillion in total expenditures by state and local governments in 2012, public education accounted for the highest percent at nearly 28 percent,

California is home to what appears to be the most wasteful K-12 spenders. ... 11 of California’s 16 most-populated cities score in the bottom 25 of U.S. cities on standard tests.

The worst performing cities have in common the very high percentages of households where English is not spoken as a first language. Research shows that the language barrier can have a disastrous effect on learning outcomes.

California, with the largest number of students, tops the English Learners category at 1,413,549. This constitutes about 22.7 percent of the total enrollment in state public schools. A total of 2,685,793 students speak a language other than English in their homes, a number that represents about 43.1 percent of the state’s public school enrollment, with 87 percent Spanish speakers.

The 73 percent majority of English learners are enrolled in the elementary kindergarten through grade six. About 27 percent are enrolled in the secondary grades, seven through twelve.

This seems to indicate that SAT scores will continue to decline as more students who do not speak English in the home pass through high school.

Former President George W. Bush’s No Child Left Behind legislation implemented in the 2000s amounted to an attempt to put a stop to unproductive spending by failing school districts. The measure required schools to meet certain performance criteria or risk being taken over or shut down, among other sanctions.

Although the rapid descent of SAT scores slowed during the Bush years, the Obama administration issued waivers and refused to enforce the No Child penalties. Since his inauguration, SAT scores have plummeted.

The SAT is for kids going to College. Maybe the US needs to re-think the policy that every teen has to go on to College.

I guess the hard-working, underpaid, selfless “educators” aren’t doing their jobs too effectively.

What are people expecting when the teachers of today are telling our kids stupid, irrational answers to simple questions, like: Where does dew come from.?

Answer (created by radical left’s teachers): The sun shines down and makes the plant sweat. [This was an actual answer on a SAT test].

And they teach that so the child will buy the “climate-change; global warming garbage”.

IS THAT WHAT YOU WANT YOUR CHILD TO LEARN ..??????????????

The truth is - when the sun shines down, the plant wilts; unless it’s watered properly.

There are 10.4 million students from immigrant households in public schools, accounting for one in five public school students. Of these students, 78 percent speak a language other than English at home.

Overall, one in four public school students now speaks a language other than English at home.

Time to dumb-down the SAT.

Let’s make everyone in the education-industrial complex look good.

The Democrat dumbing down of America seems to be working. The Democrats finally did something that actually worked.

Decades ago I worked for a community college and helped high school grads pass the SAT. I was amazed that some of the people that had their HS diploma could barely read, write or perform simple math. I was told schools pass kids to get their money and they don’t want to be accused of discrimination.

I keep hoping someone will create an Ebonics SAT, after which I will enjoy a very satisfying laugh when the white kids score higher than the Black kids.

“Research shows that the language barrier can have a disastrous effect on learning outcomes. “

There you have it. Couldn’t spell, couldn’t comprehend and couldn’t think for themselves. AND wouldn’t speak English.

Anyone here want to bet that the SAT scores have been dropping since the creation of the U.S. Dept. of Education.

The SAT is for kids going to college

The vast majority of students graduating from HS take the SAT or ACT, even if they have no intention of going to college. It skews the average downward.

As you said, they should rethink the strategy. If high schools offered more vocational training, a lot of the problem would be solved. Not everybody's talent is to be found in four years of post-HS academic work.

The actual number of excellent scores is very high, more than the excellent colleges can accommodate.

"Free college education for all" is the dumbest idea for education, and that's saying a lot. The last thing colleges need is to babysit with lazy and out-of-control kids who go to college because it's free. It will drive decent students away. JMHO

It's probably worse. There's racial "norming" bumping up some of the scores.

Some big sports and even "elite" schools do not require SATs from applicants with certain attributes of the non-academic persuasion. Probably not a significant population to have a measurable effect on the whole, though.

Demography plays a part. By 2019 half of the children 18 and under will be minorities as classified by the USG. Blacks and Hispanics have the highest dropout rates and lowest achievement scores. The changing composition of the students will be reflected in the test scores. Asian do better than everyone else.
