Audi is to unveil an electric car to rival Tesla’s forthcoming Model X that the German marque says is capable of traveling at least 310 miles on battery power alone.

The Volkswagen-owned carmaker will display the concept, a sport utility vehicle provisionally called the e-tron quattro, at next month’s Frankfurt motor show and plans to put it into production in 2018 as its first mainstream electric car.

The off-roader will be smaller than Audi’s existing full-size SUV, the Q7, and would compete with the much-delayed Model X, planned for release this year by Californian electric carmaker Tesla.

Tesla has repeatedly shrugged off competition from other carmakers, with founder Elon Musk saying he welcomes anything that jump-starts the sputtering market for electric cars.

Audi is not the only upmarket carmaker preparing plug-in vehicles. Aston Martin plans to produce an all-electric version of its Rapide sports car in the next few years, ahead of the launch of its DBX electric crossover vehicle.

310 NEDC miles means ~250 EPA miles.
Probably similar numbers when Model X debuts next month.

E-tron 4 passenger CUV.
Model X 7 passenger CUV.

Tesla nationwide network of 210 120 kWh-135 kWh no cost to charge for Tesla owners Supercharger stations with up to 12 individual chargers. Average is about 7 chargers per station. Any non working individual charger usually fixed within 2 working days.

Etron- About 200 individual CCS 24 kWh-50 kWh chargers clustered around major metro areas. Some are free. Most require various pre-paid cards. Normally about 1/10 are out of order and may take months to get working again. And these chargers are new and rarely used.

Not much has changed from 1900 or so. Refinements but still short range, long charging times. They even tried battery exchanges in the old days.

batteries are very harmful to the environment.
