There is worthwhile, cinematic television happening on the margins of True Detective stunning aerial shots of tangled Los Angeles freeways, a California Split-esque low-stakes poker room, musical homages to Twin Peaks. But the closer you get to the shows center, where a cohesive narrative should be decipherable, youre drowning a murky puddle of obtuse yet self-important storytelling.

We know far less about the myriad characters tied up in shows oblique central plot points: A murder mystery, corruption, drug trafficking, gambling Nic Pizzolatto is hitting all the crime procedural tropes, but halfway through the season, he hasnt created enough meaningful connections between them all. Beyond the four main characters Ray, Frank, Ani and Paul its still not clear who we are supposed to care about or even pay attention to (maybe the mayor of Vinci, who we were needlessly reminded in episode 4 is a bad guy.) I cant remember the last time I had to pause and rewind so frequently just to make basic sense of a scene or identify the function of a character. (That said, I really want to know more about Franks wife Jordan, who often seems like shes from another world, or at least a different show.)

Rachel McAdams is happening.
Next to Nothing was Happening except with Stannis and then the Showrunners thought it would be a good idea to let their Biases run wild and let everything fly off the rails.
I wonder if the dumb-ox at Forbes watched the first season of this show. It was pretty much the same thing. There is the occult lurking, ( no pun intended, ) in the background, dumb-ox!
Not you, Ben! ;-)
Agreed!
Lera Lynn has a fantastic voice.
That was some gun fight last episode
To be fair, season 1 was is better written, IMO.
Season 2 has a lot of klunky dialog.
Yes, we are actually watching this right now and we don’t know really what is happening.
But it was always like this with Sons of Anarchy too!
So many shows we watch and I say to hubby: I really don’t understand what is going on!
But I’m just happy re: True Detective that the one guy’s girlfriend told him she was pregnant but she doesn’t “believe in abortion”. Then he proposed.
So, I hope they don’t renege on that in anyway, because I love them for it now.
Indeed! RM is always watchable.
The city is based on corruption in an LA city in which pst of the city cicil went to jail.
Seems simple, the powers to be don’t want city officials in Vinci implicated in anything. They sent Ferrel to be on the team to protect their interests. He’s trying to decide whether or not to be a real cop.
She will have dirt thrown at her until the case is solved.
VV trying to make a buck and doesn’t care how. He knows everything about everybody in the city. I PREDICT he will lead Ferrell to arrest the city guys and he’ll walk away with some $$$$$.
Don’t know what the problems are. Plot is not exactly David Lynch.
most of the city council went to trial
I think Black Mountain is supposed to be like Blackwater.

There is no question that season one is/was much better.
I agree that the dialog in this season is klunky but the writer is a native Louisianian so that what he wrote for season one was more ‘in tune’. He may be out-of-touch with the CA culture.
I’m going to give season two the benefit of the doubt to see what develops. It can’t be halfway through the season yet.
Yes, indeed!

“He’s still in there. We might wait for him to exit.”
Anyone got anything on General Hospital around here?
Really this is what is relevant ?
