Ellen Pao Out As Reddit CEO
NPR ^ | 7/10/15 | Krishnadev Calamur, Steve Mullis

Posted on 07/10/2015 3:28:15 PM PDT by jeannineinsd

Reddit interim CEO Ellen Pao has resigned from the company in the wake of an insurrection last week in which moderators shut down many of the site's most popular sections following the still-unexplained dismissal of a popular figure in the site's r/IAmA section.

Reddit made the announcement on its website and said Steve Huffman, the founder and original reddit CEO, is returning to the helm.

"We are thankful for Ellen's many contributions to reddit and the technology industry generally," the statement said. "She brought focus to chaos, recruited a world-class team of executives, and drove growth. She brought a face to reddit that changed perceptions, and is a pioneer for women in the tech industry. She will remain as an advisor to the board through the end of 2015. I look forward to seeing the great things she does beyond that."

The statement said the departure was by mutual agreement.

"In my eight months as reddit's CEO, I've seen the good, the bad and the ugly on reddit," Pao said in a separate posting on the site. "The good has been off-the-wall inspiring, and the ugly made me doubt humanity."

For those who have been following the situation at reddit.

From article: "Pao was the focus of much anger following the dismissal of Victoria Taylor, who ran reddit's r/IAmA (Ask Me Anything) section."

I hope she gets paid a huge severance. Let those little socialist idiots chew on that for a while.

Does anyone use Reddit? What exactly is it and what makes it valuable as an entity?

Now, now. Reddit is a massive community encompassing everyone, including our people (Christians, patriots, gun-owners etc.) I will agree that the owners and employees are most likely all socialists and metrosexuals ;)

As for Pao, good riddance, though she’s probably just a paid fall guy for the new investor plans to maximize profit.

Reddit is a collection of online discussion forums. They have one thing I wish FR had: the ability to “upvote” or “downvote” posts.

“Use” is an odd term for reddit. It has its place for some very specific sub-reddits. There are also some funny threads. Some of the users are very clever.

That said, for the most part it’s like a world wide collectivist “Lord of the Flies” shit show. And anyone over the age of 17 is the character, “Fatty.”

It was far more than just Victoria. Pao pretty much destroyed Reddit’s future. She should get a nice thank you check from Voat.com

I actually won three “poster of the year” awards on reddit last year. I am very familiar with it.

The things that she got them all worked up over were things that need to be done in order to monetize the site...and keep them in business.

I think reddit is great when it’s good.

Reddit is just a large forum for a multitude of different interests, organized into their own sub forums, called subReddits. FR has some similarities in the posting of new stories, commentary abt those stories, and communities of shared beliefs. There are groups there for everything under the sun.

I tried a couple of times getting used to Reddit’s layout, which is crammed, crowded and whimsical. I wanted to see what all the fuss was about, but I could barely read any complete or coherent comments. Now, reading how venal and vindictive those in charge can be, I’m even less inclined to walk on that side of the street.

I think reddit is great when it’s good.

Does that mean when it's awful it's bad?

Amusing place to visit, but you wouldn’t want to live there.

Wow we’ve got a celeb in the house :)

I don’t blame them for a drive to profitability, as long as it doesn’t destroy usability. I’ve seen nothing egregious so far.

My beef is with some of the dictatorial admin behaviour like shadow bans, and completely ignoring user opinion. Digg fell over similar behaviour. If they chill, then I’ll stick around, even as I explore new forums like voat.

It’s a big discussion site, but outspoken conservatives have a short shelf life. Mostly younger people.

It’s pretty good for determining the current pulse of what people are talking about. I used to enjoy pulling leftists’ tails there, but looking for an intelligent debate will often leave you wanting.

Since you both seem well acquainted with this site, I’d be curious to learn your take on the kerfuffle - what happened? Was it simply a reaction to attempts at monetizing, or were there political considerations wherein censorship, etc. became a problem? I’d rather hear your perspectives than what mainstream sources (of course both of you may be just that!) might say.
