'Terminator Genisys': Schwarzenegger can't save messy sequel, reviews say
Los Angeles Times ^ | July 1, 2015

Posted on 07/01/2015 1:25:39 PM PDT by BenLurkin

"In smashing together elements from the first two 'Terminator' movies with Digital Age anxiety over connectivity and privacy, the new movie is kind of like a wedding DJ remixing period hits with a modern beat. Which is to say, 'Terminator Genisys' is no fresh start — it's a mess."

Olsen continues, "could be Exhibit A in why the current line of thinking in Hollywood regarding sequels/reboots/remakes often leads to terrible decisions and worse films. ... The popular term is 'reimagining,' taking some things and not others, which in this case apparently really means not entirely thinking things through." Alas, he says, "bigger is not better, complicated is not the same as complex."

...

In addition to the "busy-bee plot," Burr continues, it also suffers from "the underwhelming impact of the two leads. [Jai] Courtney is a bland stand-in for Michael Biehn's original Kyle Reese, and once you've witnessed Linda Hamilton's ferocious mama-bear intensity in 'Terminator 2,' [Emilia] Clarke's Sarah Connor can't help but seem a soft-bellied pretender in comparison."

They're right about Hamilton as Sarah Conner. (And as a complete digression -- I really enjoyed her performances in "Defiance")

And besides, there already has been an excellent Sara Conner as played by

Between Hamilton and Headey, this new kid doesn't stand a chance.

I already bought my ticket. I don’t care, it’s a Terminator movie, I love them. And if it’s really that bad the theater I go to has a full bar that can fix ANY movie... though I might need a cab.

I read a bunch of reviews on Metacritic today.....Not looking good.
The casting director and the writers should be fired.

4 was really a mess. I like what McG did with the first (and only the first) Charlie’s Angels, for the most part, but they turned Terminator into Transformers and lost me at that point.

There were parts of it that were OK.

4 was a lesson in be careful what you wish for. Ever since the scenes from the future in T1 we all wanted to see the actual war... turns out that wasn’t such a good idea. Probably wasn’t helped by the fact that their vision was another trilogy with the 6th movie being the beginning of the 1st, thinking that long term kept them from telling a proper story I think because right from the start they didn’t want the end to be the end. There were some fun parts, but it missed its mark. I thought it was better than T3 though, 3 felt like “hey let’s just do 2 again, only with a chick, and we lose, so we can setup for the war”. At least 4 got to be a new movie.

As soon as I saw that this clown was going to be in it, I knew this movie would be a steaming pile.

Also, I am not really sure how Hollywierd has become so bad at casting. They used to be really good at it, but no more.

I really like Emilia Clarke as Danearys, she is good for that part.

But Sarah Connor? as in Linda Evans... mmm no, not a good fit.

Linda Evans will kick that ass, Emilia is cute.

I cheered when Defiance had Hamilton say “come with me if you want to live” rescuing law-dude. I know it was total fan service, but hey, who doesn’t like being serviced.

It could have been. If they had done the future war vs. the robots along the lines of the first and second movies.

They fell for the Transformers thing. Totally destroyed the premise.

Went tot he prescreening last night with the wife, both of us liked it. It was not Thomas Hardy's "Far from the Madding Crowd". But were weren't expecting it to be.

There was one large plot hole, but I am not going to mention it, as I hate giving spoilers.

The Connor and Reese characters do okay?

The Reese character was good, not as good as the first, but still good. Connor was good in the beginning, weak for pat of the middle, but the character grabs you in the last third.

Do you think it will beat Magic Mike? I really hope it does as Terminator is at least family movie for the most part. Magic Mike is really a silly movie that should never make the money it is going to make because it is getting so much attention from commercials and commentators. Terminator hasn’t had much promotion at all. I think Arnold should call out about that.
