Essay on Political Correctness and the old Monarchies

I always thought the religious history of England was so silly. They started off Catholic. Then when Henry VIII had a dispute with the Pope, he started his own church. And he demanded that everyone in his country join his new church. He even killed some who opposed the change. When his daughter Mary became Queen, the whole country had to revert back to Catholicism. She killed some people too, acheiving the nickname "Bloody Mary." When Mary died and Elizabeth became Queen, the whole country had to change religions again. This happened many times in Europe and it all seems so silly........

"Those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it."

But aren't we doing the same thing in America today? Whenever public opinion changes, we are all expected to "convert" to the new politically correct standards. When Obama was elected to the presidency in 2008, he was not in favor of homosexual marriage. In fact, most people, including elected Democrats, opposed homosexual marriage. But somewhere in the last few years, they changed their minds. Now they favor same-sex marriage and, like the European monarchs, they demand the country convert to the new belief. Those who hold fast to the old beliefs, may not be killed but the will be persecuted and even prosecuted.

TOPICS: History; Religion; Society
KEYWORDS: homosexuality; marriage
This is the preliminary essay. It got a dozen likes on facebook posts, but I need critiques, including proofreading, examples, corrections, a title and an ending

Get in something about co-opting the old beliefs.

E.g., Santa Claus will be turned into Herbert on Family Guy.

You could work the persecution of Thomas Moore into the posting. And the crass opportunism of Thomas Cromwell, if you need examples.

An excellent thesis. It captures the historical illiteracy of the current group trying to force their religion on the rest of us.

With all due respect, they never really changed their minds. Their minds were set and in favor of this from the beginning of their political careers. However, it is very difficult to win a general, national election when you take a stand that a majority of Americans oppose, so you say that you are against the controversial action to side with the majority and prevent political casualties. And that is what happened.

Notice the timing of this “evolution.” Obama “evolved” when it was politically convenient for him to do so, when the issue no longer served as a real political liability for him. But after a while, nobody seemed to care (particularly the 3+ million Conservatives who obviously weren’t motivated enough about this issue to go to the polls in 2012), so ever since then, it has become widely perceived as a “non-issue” and as such, has even permitted the environment for many Republicans (whether gay or straight and sympathetic) to support gay marriage. So, I am not surprised in the slightest.

“Stand for something or you will fall for anything.”
Same-sex marriage may be the most recent politically correct forced conversion, but it is not the first. Americans and citizens of many other countries have been required to accept new beliefs for language, morality, fashion, education.... the list is never ending. I remember when free-range parenting and spanking were the norm. Now they are prosecuted as child abuse. Communism was understood to be an oppressive government that killed millions, but today Communist leaders are celebrated even in American schools. The Virginia battle flag was proudly raised over the SC capitol building (by a Democrat governor), but is now declared racist by those who mislabel it.

different ending:

Modern society has gone through many changes: language, morality, fashion, education.... the list is never ending. Most people accepted these changes, just going along with the crowd. Those who clung to the old ways may have been mocked, but seldom did it go beyond minor persecution.

However, now these changes are taking a frightening turn, adding the force of law to require acceptance of these changes. Like the old monarchies, everyone must be of the same belief. Everyone MUST agree to same-sex marriages or they face prosecution. Churches are now in the cross-hairs.

I remember when free-range parenting and spanking were the norm. Now they are prosecuted as child abuse. Predicting the weather was a challenge, but no one could control it. However, now everyone is expected to accept that mankind's pollution is changing the climate. There are many who want "deniers" silenced through legal action.
