MILWAUKEE COUNTY, Wis. —Federal investigators have charged the owners of several popular Milwaukee-area restaurants.

The owners of El Beso, El Fuego and Omega Burger are accused of cheating the IRS and face millions in fines.

Investigators said the owners are accused of under reporting sales and building up a huge hidden reserve of cash and silver.

According to the indictment, Paul Bouraxis and his wife, Freida Bouraxis, their son, Andreas Bouraxis, and son-in-law, Reiad Awadalla, skimmed cash from restaurant receipts and hid it from the IRS by not depositing it in bank accounts and paying employees in cash.

Hiding cash by NOT DEPOSITING it..?

In my wallet is cash. It is not in the bank.

I’m a criminal..?

You notice the pattern?

Gummint now don’t gotta ALL MANNER of things they’re required by statute to disclose.

While WE gotta document EVERYTHING, even stuff for which there are no rules requiring documentation.

Well, if someone is under-reporting sales and income to the IRS, they shouldn’t whine too much when they get caught.

Want to cheat on taxes? They should move to Greece.

By the way - what kind of names are those?

Just give 10 grand to the Obama Presidential Library and it will all go away.

I suspect that the “Underground Economy” is going particularly strong during this Great Recession...

I agree, but I have the vague feeling that the precious metals part of this situation is the really politically threatening aspect of this case and they’re throwing in the more intuitive under-reporting claim as distractive window dressing.

Just a guess.

It’s like they think for some reason there will be much more of this in the future.

I expect that a little skim from a cash intensive business isn’t that unusual. They did something to put themselves on the radar. You may be right about what that was.

For work on my house and property, I always offer cash, and sometimes get discounts. I’m also not interested in paperwork. That’s up to the contractors. If they don’t report the income? That’s their problem, not mine.

Don’t worry.

When we learn that all that missing cash found its way into Mexico, the G will drop this case.

That’s funny.

Many years ago I had heard some amazing statistic that Greeks own more restaurants than any other “group”.

Not just Greek restaurants but virtually everything.

One evening my Greek wife and I were at a Mexican “hole in the wall” and could hear the cooks and staff arguing from the kitchen. My wife who was fluent was shocked and said “They are all Greek”.

Objectively, it’s an interesting culture. Like a house of cards that continues to build itself higher and higher out of self preservation.

They clearly have lost their foundations along the way and for the most part are completely bankrupt.

But they don’t know that.
