Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush faced the same decision as South Carolina officials - whether to remove the Confederate flag from statehouse grounds - more than a decade ago.
With far less fanfare, Bush as Florida's governor 14 years ago removed the Confederate flag from the Florida state Capitol in Tallahassee. On Feb. 2, 2001, the flag moved to the Museum of Florida History.
A Bush spokeswoman said at the time that the governor believed that most Floridians would agree symbols of the past "should not be displayed in a manner that may divide Floridians today."
Though Bush's action drew scant public attention initially, his email correspondence shows that Floridians soon responded with a mix of praise and vile.

As Governor of Texas, George W. Bush had the plaques honoring the Confederate Soldiers of Texas removed from the Capital building in Texas. This is part the legacy of the Bush family.
I think the intention is to poke and provoke people, to get a reaction. I can't think of a way to count up the nutcases on the two sides, one side being inclined to act if the flag stays (status quo), the other side being inclined to act if the flag is "banned."

I agree, but I think its more of a political game. The left could have just as easily said “Roof drove a car to the church, so we need to ban cars”. That would have been equally silly. And what they are fishing for is a Republican...hopefully one up for election...to say “No banning cars has nothing to do with this”...or in this case “The flag has nothing to do with this.”
And the tarring and feathering will have begun. A neat trick, considering democrats are primarily responsible for placing the Confederate flag on statehouse domes, state flags, and license plates. But the GOP will get tarred.
I’m a Texan by choice. I moved here from Philly 12 yrs ago. One thing I liked is Texans love of state and their state flag. In Pennsylvania most millennials couldn’t tell you what the Pennsylvania flag looks like.
I can see both side of the Confederate flag issue but I ask where does it stop. Will Mexicans make Texas remove our state flag?

Or how about this? Before the secession, the flag that represented the slave-holding states was the stars and stripes. So if the stars and bars represents slavery, then the stars and stripes does as well. How long do you think it will be before libs call that flag racist and demand we take it down?
It will happen after the Confederate flag is buried, then they’ll work on the US flag, which they have burned, stepped on and out right desecrated again and again.
