Ten years ago, a 24-year-old chimpanzee named Barney picked up a blue barrel laying in his enclosure at the Biomedical Primate Research Centre in the Netherlands and began drumming. Not randomly banging on the thing in a “noise-making display,” as is common for great apes, but actually drumming; he maintained an even and precise tempo, “close to human tempo for rhythmic music,” write the authors of a study published last week in the journal Scientific Reports.

Barney was a typical chimpanzee at the time. He was born in captivity, and was a low-ranking member of a group of five male chimpanzees at the Netherlands center. On the day of the drum solo—in January 2005—Valerie Dufour, a primatologist who studies ethology and cognition, was nearby. Dufour didn’t have a camera, but quietly approached the enclosure and taped the session on a voice recorder. Here's a clip:
