Cyndi Lauper, Van Morrison and Lady Gaga have all been inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
The stars received their honours at a three-hour ceremony in New York, and many expressed surprise in their acceptance speeches...
...The Grateful Dead's Jerry Garcia, was also inducted posthumously alongside the band's lyricist Robert Hunter.
Country artists Toby Keith, who has sold more than 40 million albums worldwide, and Bobby Braddock, who wrote Tammy Wynette's DIVORCE, were also honoured.
And "poet laureate of the blues" Willie Dixon, who died in 1992, was cited for songs including Hoochie Coochie Man, I Just Want to Make Love to You and You Can't Judge a Book by the Cover...
Gaga won the contemporary icon award, receiving her trophy from jazz star Tony Bennett, with whom she recorded an album of duets last year...
The singer also covered the 4 Non Blondes hit What's Up in tribute to fellow honoree Linda Perry, who penned that song, as well as Christina Aguilera's Beautiful and Pink's Get The Party Started...

“Get the party started” is considered a “hall of fame” song?
Pffft. Ego centric pop faddle.
That Van Morrison should could write some tunes, no?

A wee late for Hunter-Garcia.
modern music
You left out “Brown Eyed Girl.”
Lady Gaga? It took no time at all to elevate her! Oh, they knew right away what an enormous talent she was! [/s]
Van Morrison absolutely. His treatment of the classic St. James infirmary is the best.
What the bowel movement?!? Linda freaking Perry?
"What's Up?" is one of the worst songs ever written, and Perry can't carry a tune to save her soul.
Nice hat, Linda. Geee-yawd!
He didn’t write St. James Infirmary.
Those cuts were from his contractual obligation album.
Don’t expect to see another Gershwin recognized by the industry in our lifetime.
Lauper could arrange some nice stuff, but most too pop and her voice too screechy.
Does Cyndi Lauper have brown eyes?
Jet Airliner wasn’t written by Steve Miller.
His band did put out a good “Live at the Fillmore” album with Chuck Berry.
But he did right the lyrics and record the song.
“Like several others of the time that you were just “supposed” to like, like Steve Miller, Leon Russel, I never could stand them.”
I’ve always felt that way about Bob Seger. I never could understand why so many people were into his stuff. I want to jab pencils into my eardrums every time I hear “Come to Pappa” on the radio.
Each to their own, of course.
I believe she does.
Willie Dixon deserves it. And Led Zeppelin owes him some apologies.
Linda Perry is a good performer, for the type of tone she wants to set, but many of her self-written songs are clumsy, clunky and overcluttered with sound effects. Roar is but one example. And the kids eat it right up like a cat lapping milk from a dirty bowl.
