Why Dogs Are Better Than Cats
Real Clear Science ^

Posted on 06/19/2015 8:10:41 AM PDT by Altariel

Here are five (mostly) scientific reasons why dogs trump cats.

1. Exercise motivation

While dogs demand physical and recreational activity, all cats demand is food and a comfy sofa to sleep on all day. Great job being a role model, Felix!

****

2. Give the elderly a purpose

Pets are wonderful stress relievers for people of all ages, but the elderly in particular benefit from owning a dog.

****

3. Sniff Out Cancer

Cats have an attuned sense of smell, but they're difficult to train. The top cats also can't match the top dogs nose for nose.

****

4. Smarter

Cats have more neurons in their brains than dogs, but by most accounts, dogs put theirs to better use, performing tasks like leading the blind or locating survivors of a disaster.

****

5. Stronger Bond with Humans

Cats can be just as affectionate as dogs, but there's little question that the bond between a dog and its owner is stronger.

Cats are basically like us, dogs are willing to follow us.

Depends on the cat. Depends onthe owner. I've owned both, and I have never had a stronger bond with any animal than my cat, Jean-Marie.

I have both a dog and a cat. I like both species as a pet, but I have to agree that dogs are more communicative, loyal and obedient. Still, I like my cat, too. I think it is more difficult to get a good cat than it is to get a good dog. I’ve had some cats that were aloof to the point of being almost hostile.

Lock your wife and your dog in the trunk. Come back in an hour and see which one is happy to see you.

but the elderly in particular benefit from owning a dog.

Not all elderly. (Most) dogs need to go on walks. Some elderly cannot accommodate that.

Other elderly people might have hospital stays or other events that keep them from walking the dog, letting it outside several times a day or giving it necessary affection.

I like the independent nature of cats.
My cat is very affectionate.
I don’t have to walk her.

Having a dog is like having a child that never grows up.

Not in my house, the big orange tom basically views the dog as a weird looking cat, which has led to the dog learning that butt sniffing is a challenge, not a friendly greeting. Makes things a little weird around the other dogs ;)

Cats definitely smarter.

Find me 6 or 8 cats ‘dumb’ enough to be coaxed into a harness in Sub 00 weather, wind howling, then be willing to haul one’s ‘fat arse’ through the snow.

Go on a trip and leave 3 cats with a bunch of food spread around the house, plenty of water, especially leave a dish of something they don’t like. You can be gone for a week and there will be food etc left.

Try that with a dog and ALL the food will be gone, water tipped over etc by the time you clear the driveway.

Try herding cats.....

The dog definitely is running the show.

I have a small dog & 3 cats. The cats all have claws. The dog doesn't run a thing except herself past the most hostile cat.

A newly discovered chapter in the Book of Genesis has provided the answer to “Where do pets come from?”

Adam and Eve said, “Lord, when we were in the garden, you walked with us every day. Now we do not see you anymore. We are lonesome here and it is difficult for us to remember how much you love us.”

And God said, “No problem! I will create a companion for you that will be with you forever and who will be a reflection of my love for you, so that you will love me even when you cannot see me. Regardless of how selfish or childish or unlovable you may be, this new companion will accept you as you are and will love you as I do, in spite of yourselves.”

And God created a new animal to be a companion for Adam and Eve. And it was a good animal. And God was pleased.

And the new animal was pleased to be with Adam and Eve and he wagged his tail.

And Adam said, “Lord, I have already named all the animals in the Kingdom and I cannot think of a name for this new animal.”

And God said, “No problem. Because I have created this new animal to be a reflection of my love for you, his name will be a reflection of my own name, and you will call him DOG.”

And Dog lived with Adam and Eve and was a companion to them and loved them. And they were comforted.

And God was pleased. And Dog was content and wagged his tail.

After a while, it came to pass that an angel came to the Lord and said, “Lord, Adam and Eve have become filled with pride. They strut and preen like peacocks and they believe they are worthy of adoration. Dog has indeed taught them that they are loved, but perhaps too well.”

And God said, “No problem! I will create for them a companion who will be with them forever and who will see them as they are. The companion will remind them of their limitations, so they will know that they are not always worthy of adoration.”

And God created CAT to be a companion to Adam and Eve.

And Cat would not obey them. And when Adam and Eve gazed into Cat’s eyes, they were reminded that they were not the supreme beings. And Adam and Eve learned humility.

And they were greatly improved.

And God was pleased. And Dog was happy.

And Cat didn’t give a shit one way or the other.

I clicked through the hyperlink that lists why cats are better than dogs, and no surprise, a pet owner wouldn’t care about any of them!

Good luck deciding to hit the road for a week or two and leaving the dog(s) with a bucket of food and water until you get back.

Works with cat(s) every time.
