Its a long road and there are definite no go areas but GOP leadership at the state level has worked wonders.

There’s a solid pro 2nd amendment police chief who is doing a good job and encouraging the people to arm themselves and bring the crime rate down. (appointed by the emergency manager)

They have their first white mayor in Decades. He’s a democrat but is relatively pro business.

Big money guys like Dan Gilbert and Roger Penske are doing a lot of heavy lifting with their own money.

Downtown is looking pretty good these days and is filling up.

That’s what I’ve been hearing.

When I was there it was like a scene from Fight Club.

A guy I knew that was living at the “Trolley” would hit golf balls, full swing from his apartments living room through the sliding glass doors and over the balcony rail into the darkness of the boarded up buildings.

Nice pic. Bummer though for architectural preservation.

I’be heard that Detroit is coming back. This has been the meme for decades. However, it may be actually happening now. Downtown has become unrecognizable to me. Apartments are literally 99% occupied downtown. A lot of building going on, and Detroit is becoming a monopoly board. Wish more of it could have saved. There are blocks and blocks and blocks vacant. Most other blocks with building are empty. Take a Google Earth tour.

Facilities where I used to work in Flint (~1987) have been torn down. Sad. Many Good Things happened there.

Dan Gilbert owns some 40 downtown buildings. He was going to build a new one for his Quicken HQ but decided to start renovating instead. He’s attracting a lot of tech business with major upgrades and low rent.

Lots of Hipsters downtown these days.

I drove past there a few years ago when doing Cell Tower Drive Testing.

That was the nice area at that time.

I’ve heard about the Hipsters but not Gilbert’s commitments.

Personally, if I had the financial resources? I’d be all over Detroit.

It’s like buying beach front property after a hurricane.

My dad used to work in the engineering building on the east side...in the Leith street neighborhood as I remember...and I could ride my bike there in safety back in the early 60’s,

My Uncle worked at the Chevrolet plant near the river.

I worked at a truck plant on the southside of town for a few months one summer

The right kind of forethought and the resources to go with them could make a strong man very rich. The bankruptcy has been a good thing and there is a lot of investment going on. Hell Canada is building a new bridge and paying for it.

While they aren’t my kind of people, I gotta admire the hipsters and their willingness to get in there and work.

Its also legal to defend yourself with lethal force in Detroit. They’ve bucked the urban trend and have embraced guns.

Well, from what have seen some of the hipsters are actually squatters.

They will need to work out any number of issues with the city regarding rent, taxes, ownership and BACK TAXES !!

Oh Canada, my running mate and I were refused entry into Windsor one evening. I can’t imagine why? /s

The last time I visited my gps when they lived there was about fifty years ago. All my Detroit relatives have since, like my grandparents, died or moved to other locations. Whereas I used to have numerous relatives living in the Detroit area/suburbs, I now have zero living there.

Heath was actually in St. Joseph MI for a long time.

Drove out there from suburban Detroit a few times when I couldn’t wait to mail a check and and then wait for delivery. (This was before Heath opened a retail store in Southfield MI.)

Except for that little crock-pot incident last year, we haven’t had a murder in our town in years. There was a family that owned a jewelry store who was targeted and all murdered at Christmas about 15 years ago, but the perps were from Detroit.
