Although Senator Ted Cruz is generally seen as a guy whos mostly into domestic policies, he proved with an op-ed for Time that hes very well aware of whats happening in the world. In his piece, Cruz explains that Turkeys President Recep Tayyip Erdogans defeat in the elections on Sunday paves the way towards a better relationship between the U.S. and Turkey at least with regards to the war on terror:
"This is good news for Turkey, and it should be good news for the United States as well. Turkey has been a long-standing friend to our nation, and is an important NATO ally. But Mr. Erdogans increasingly autocratic, Islamist and anti-American policies, largely un-rebuked by the Obama administration, have threatened this relationship. Under his rule, Turkey has become a leader in Internet censorship and the persecution of journalists. Mr. Erdogans administration has been aggressively hostile to our ally Israel, further inflaming regional tensions. By withholding access to the NATO air base at Incirlik, Turkey has further jeopardized our already anemic campaign against the spread of ISIS along Turkeys borders with Syria and Iraq."
Erdogans islamist AKP is still the biggest party in Parliament, but it lost almost 10% of its votes. Whats more, because of the rise of the Kurdish HDP party the Islamists cannot form a majority government by themselves. They either have to join forces with an opposition party (who already said theyre not going to work with Erdogan), establish a minority government (which is very weak), call for new elections soon or a combination of these possible scenarios. In theory its even possible that the AKP will lose its hold on power altogether: if all three opposition parties join forces, they can form a government without them.

Yup. The Kurds did very well in the Turkish elections which certainly makes fighting ISIS a lot easier.
I see that Cruz had Saul Anuzis headed to Turkey yesterday to meet with the new lawmakers.
Can we give them northern Syria?
I don't see any reason why not:)
Who can take Erdogan’s place, and how can we know s/he is someone we can deal with?
Is it ours to give?
How many here really expect Erdogan to relinquish power? I don’t. I fully expect him to declare Kurdish votes and MPs to be irrelevant and illegal, as the Kurds are tacitly in rebellion against the Gov’t.
I see Erdogan as a totalitarian in the making.
Yes, if Turkey spends the blood to take it and bring order from that chaos.
We can cover them at the UN.
The only thing Russia wants out of it is a port, and we could cut them that part off as Sovereign territory too.
Turkey is on the side of ISIS,,,i mean “the moderate Syrian opposition”.
The Kurds are rapidly outbreeding the Turks and I believe they’re a sizable majority in the eastern half of the country. That means Edrogan has to be careful about his attempts to marginalize them or he’ll lose the eastern part of the country.
Personally I think a Kurdish nation is on the horizon.
I think Obama & Hillary tried that and manpads ended up in Afghanistan with the Taliban shooting down our helicopters.
That’s it! Ted Cruz has lost my vote!
There, said it as quickly as I could before the trolls could keep posting their garbage.
You must not have seen the laser-guided and fly-by-wire anti tank weapons ISIS seems to have by the thousands. Probably all from Libya. YouTube it.
A Kurdish nation comprised of their parts of Turkey, Iraq, and a little bit of Syria would be an excellent idea. It would separate ISIS territory from Muslim Turkey and Sunni-dominated parts of Iraq.
Why does Cruz want to save Turkey as it is?
Yes, we need allies. The Kurds are fighting valiantly and well, but more is needed.
Don’t post to me.
Cruz has been talking about getting them actual air support rather than what we have now with 1 of every 3 jets returning with bombs still hanging under the wings.
Incentive, hell we should be threatening them. Dance to our tune or we help your Kurds break away to form a country with the Iraqi Kurds.
“Thats it! Ted Cruz has lost my vote!”
Yeh me too. Ted fell down and went boom on this TPP. No way to talk his way out. He is dead to me and a lot of others. I don’t see him as the nominee. He has committed suicide with this TPA and TPP support. Why listen to him on any other subject.
If you’ll notice, zero and the RATS are not crowing about this. It’s mass confusion and despair for them. Consider that, at least, until we get through the weekend and more data appears :)
