Wow. Flat-out, nearly wire to wire. What a runner.

Was in the lead by the 1st turn, never let go of it. That stride along the backstretch showed a horse running flat-out, with that flawed right rear kick. Flawed my ass. By the fourth turn the field appeared to be putting on their last push, the horses seemed to bunch up, but coming out of the fourth American Pharoah was still in the lead, and, as it turns out, hadn't been running flat-out after all. The lead grew by the finish line. Oldest jockey ever to ride to Triple Crown victory, he was a perfect match for that horse. Career wins for American Pharoah, 6 and 2.

Definitely not a bad time at all. The voiceover at the halfway point said 1:15. The track record is 2:24, Secretariat of course. :’)

Look at all those white people.
They’re just ignoring the brown horse, of course.

:’) The Preakness run was also fun to watch, and the track was a big sloppy morass from rain.

Thankfully Obama didn't get involved in picking a winner...

Any pick by him would have been the curse of death...

Great race...

2nd best to Sercretariot’s record of 2:26, American Pharoah time was 2:26 3/5.

That was a nice time, wasn’t it? 2:26.65. Secretariat ran each quarter faster than the preceding quarter, accelerating at the finish, winning with a long lead; by the math, couldn’t have had a 1:15 first half. That jockey put on the gas during the back stretch, and just went by everyone after just keeping pace. That horse had an abnormally large heart, if memory serves.

The race coverage cut away just as the trainer reached the spot where Secretariat’s trainer (?or owner?) was there to greet him. What a letdown. Looked like the stands were packed.

Should watch the video of Secretariot’s acceleration from last to first in the 1st turn in the Preakness in 1973.

Presuming Espinoza grabbed the immediate lead and stayed there on Baffert’s orders, it’s really the only strategy you can live with afterward: if you have a chance to win the Triple Crown on a great horse, then get out in front, avoid trouble, and make them beat you.
