Is it possible to be a HAPPY spinster?
Daily Mail ^ | 06/04/2015 | Claudia Connell, Melissa Kite and Kate Mulvey

Kate Mulvey, 51, says she wakes in the night terrified no man will want her.

Claudia Connell, 48, is glad she didn't end up with the wrong man.

Melissa Kite, 43, is convinced being unmarried by choice is a growing trend.

Can a spinster ever be truly happy or fulfilled without a man or children in her life? This is being furiously debated after the publication of Kate Bolick’s controversial new book, which argues that modern singletons are actually content with their lot. But is the author of Spinster: Making A Life Of One’s Own deluded — or on to something? Here, three spinsters give their views...

Three women give three differing views on being older and single. I am curious what the conservative ladies think about choosing a single life instead of marriage.

The apostle Paul said it was a good thing, with the caveat that if you could not be sexually abstinent then marriage was necessary.

My best friend is single and will soon be 60. I don’t think she is more or less happy than most of the married women I know. And she has personality enough for 3 people.

Life is challenge and a marriage isn’t a guarantee for happiness. A loveless marriage is the worst thing I can imagine.

Since it’s not a choice I made myself, I can’t say anything about it. I would observe that there’s a difference between “choosing to be single” and “making choices that result in ending up single.”

It seems that quite a few women end up permanently single, when that’s not really what they wanted, because they decided against pursuing marriage at the most probable time of life.

Is it possible to be happy when you are disabled? Is it possible to be happy if you have Down’s syndrome? Is it possible to be happy if you are born with one leg? Is it possible to be happy if you have cancer? Of course.

Given all these choices, I much rather be the spinster.

I married a lady that believed she was destine to be a spinster ... Best decision I ever made but the lady, I married, has class beyond anyone have ever met .... and is so much more capable of giving than taking and if I meet her half-way (which I try to do) she overwhelms me with more caring than I’ve ever know ... Am a lucky person ...

Why don’t they ever ask this question of old men?

Sure, but the spinster will need 42 cats.

Happy people can be happy in any circumstance. My late friend, Patty, was single until her untimely death at 63. She was just a happy person who attracted many people to her. She just had no interest in dating or marrying and she was straight.

Well I’m not a spinster but I was unmarried for over 20 years when I met Mr. GG2. I finally got the right guy. I’m sorry I wasn’t a spinster the whole time til I met him. He was worth the wait.

I have a friend who never married til she was 48 and she said she just never met the right guy. They have been happily married for many years now.

Agree with you. Once you realize what it feels when you've found the right one, you couldn't bear being without him. It's very visceral and strong.

For me, anyway.

One of my uncles didn’t marry until he was 72; he lived into his 90s, and so was happily married for over 20 years.

But, “it is not good for man to be alone” (said the Designer).

I’m 34, never been married, and honestly don’t give it much thought. I’m not opposed to getting married but I don’t dwell on it and if it never happens then I still think I’ll have a full and rewarding life.

My cousin got married for the first time when she was 55. He was in his 60s and had been married previously. They’ve been married 13 years now and seem quite happy. I always remember their anniversary because one of my sons was born a few days earlier!

Is there a chart showing the number of cats needed by spinster age and house size?
