Need Movie Help: mentioned on Fox and Friends 2 mornings ago
6/3/2015 | me

A couple mornings ago someone was interviewing 2 guys and one of the guys referenced a movie from the 1940's about our guys coming back from war and when they did, they discovered the gov't was taking guns(?), ammo(?); I can't remember exactly but the premise was the gov't taking over and the soldiers took things into their own hands.

Anyone have any ideas? I know this is just vague enough to drive all of you nuts too!!

It was in a small town in Tennessee or thereabouts, if that helps.

Alright, thanks all....I’m guessing it is Battle of Athens but for some reason I was thinking he rattled off a different name.

There was a movie, probably in the early 50s called “The Phenix City Story”.

Phenix City, Alabama was under the control of a crime syndicate. It was wide open with all the vices. A citizens committee organized to clean up the city.

One of the members was attorney, Albert Patterson who got elected attorney general of Alabama with the intent of cleaning up the city.

Albert Patterson was murdered before he could take office but his son who had returned from WWII took up the cause. Eventually the publicity caused the governor to declare martial law. He sent in troops who dismantled the gambling machines etc and burned them in the streets.

The gang was run out of town and supposedly were the same group which Buford Pusser ran into in Tennessee.

They might be getting a couple different movies mixed up. "American Story" is, I think the only movie based on the Battle of Athens.

But there was also "The Best Years of Our Lives", about the difficulties of returning servicemen. It didn't feature the taking up of arms against a corrupt government, but does fit at least part of the plot you describe and is from the right time period.

“The Phenix City Story” was good but not quite as good as it is rated. It is typically thought of as one of the great movies of that era often getting 5 stars out of 5 in reviews I have read.

Anyone with a good link to the real story of this (please no wiki link, I don’t trust them).

I am interested in reading up on this.

Ahh yes

the returning vets went to war with the corrupt sheriff and politicos
. The vets won and ended decades of democrat corruption in the county

the older brother of a very close friend was there and remembers it well. My friend was there and too young to remember

I don’t know the name of the movie

***were the same group which Buford Pusser ...***

I worked for a supervisor who had family in that area. He said the reason Pusser went on a rampage against the mob was...He wasn’t getting his share of the “take”.

There’s also a curious little film from 1945 that famed radio-writer Arch Oboler wrote and directed, entitled “Strange Holiday,” in which an ordinary, middle-class guy comes back from a fishing vacation to find America has been taken over by totalitarian invaders. Gets put in a prison camp and everything. It’s a bit low-budget and somewhat unsubtle, even though Oboler did manage to cast a big name like Claude Rains in the lead.

Generally not too well-known a film, and hasn’t tended to circulate all that much. But interesting as an oddity.
