Elementary School Kitchen Manager Fired for Giving Students Without Money Free Lunch

A married mother of two was fired from her job as the kitchen manager at an elementary school in Colorado for giving lunches to students who didn’t have money, CBS Denver reports.

Della Curry was the manager at Dakota Valley Elementary School near Aurora. She told CBS Denver that she would see students — who often times weren’t signed up for free lunch programs — crying because of hunger and no lunch money.

“I had a first grader in front of me, crying because she doesn’t have enough money for lunch,” Curry told CBS. “Yes, I gave her lunch.”

Typically, students who don’t have lunch and don’t qualify for free or reduced lunch receive one slice of cheese on a hamburger bun, and a small milk. Believing that meal not sufficient, Curry often bought the students lunch with money from her own pocket, she said.

To qualify for free lunch, a family of four needs to have an income of around $31,000. Curry said many students she helped did not qualify for that program. Parents stepped up in Curry’s defense, saying she often helped when students forgot their lunch money.

The school district claims it followed policy in firing her. Anyone who has ever been terminated — like Curry — directly violated policy, the district said.

She was supposed to dump their lunch in the trash. Shame on her.

Usually lunch programs simply charge the parents through an invoice after the fact. Can’t see why a school doesn’t have a system like this in place.

People that send their kids to government school today are child abusers.

Of course, it means less than $31,000.

The problem is irresponsible parents not giving their kids either a sack lunch or lunch money.

And of course the parents, most likely single mothers, will not be investigated for neglect.

My kids have NEVER missed lunch at school. Their kitchen manager is the finest lady I ever met.

Guess that’s just another small benefit of home schooling....

I wouldn’t want to send my kid to this school district. She was a human being in helping the kids and do agree, the parents should at least give the kids some food money. However, my interpretation is these are the rules and the rules stink.

Wait it minute here! What happen? Liberals are so good wasting taxpayers money. So this lady, God Bless her, gave the students who forgot their money or didn’t have money for a free lunch. So why is the school so jumpy over this. They should congratulate her for being compassion.

Someone has to. You can’t tell me sending your kids to watch gay porn in health class isn’t child abuse. To say nothing of the rest of the abuse they get there.

Mom and dad need to man up and go without a little, buy junior a laptop and get him into online schools with classes they can monitor.

Freepers don’t like it? Tough.

I guess having a sense of decency and working for the government are not compatible.

A cheese sandwich and milk seems sufficient on occasion. It won’t kill a kid to have a light lunch and it might help him remember his money the next time.

I remember days I didn’t have lunch money at school. I sat there and watched others eat. I don’t think back then they gave you anything. I didn’t die. It did not hurt me one bit. Neither did I starve. Skipping a meal once in awhile is not going to kill anyone. But this isn’t even that. They get a cheese sandwich and milk. If people want more, donate.

Additionally, peers can learn to share something from their own lunches. It is a good lesson for them.

When I was in high school my Dad would give us our lunch money at the beginning of the week. Mine was often gone before lunch on Monday. I had a very good friend who would share sometimes. Otherwise I just skipped lunch. Big deal.

The left is salivating... here is a perfect "crisis" for a nationalized free lunch program.

How many of us grew up hungry? How many of us were determined to make a living earning an income so that we may never go hungry again?

Remove incentive for self-preservation and enslave the masses as servants to The State... The liberal agenda, there it is.
