Good question. Running Win XP SP3 here. Installed in July, 2008. “Patches” applied = none. Works fine, never had a virus (Avast in use). Kerio firewall (no longer available).

But that's far from the typical Windows user case.
Anybody surfing the web these days with an unpatched system is asking for more trouble than if they do the patches, statistically speaking.
Agree.
Too many updates/upgrades from MS and other software companies cause more problems than they resolve.
Last year, for example, one of the Win7 updates caused some laptops to crash and go into a cycle of restart-crash-restart-crash.

I quit Firefox for similar reasons. Updates killed extensions or conflicted with Flash video. Opening a PDF is a crap shoot — sometimes it will open, most times not.
The laptop is never connected to the raw internet. I would be crazy to do that. ;)
Even I'm not that crazy.
I just don't like fixing something that works like I want it to.

Depends on whether you’re connecting to the internet, or the internet is connecting to you.
I've got it wrapped up so tight that only a few services are allowed to even get to that laptop.

A server needs to support 512-bit DHE key lengths for an attack to be successful; the minimum allowable DHE key length in default configurations of Windows servers is 1024 bits.
Sooooo... it's not a concern? Then again, if MS didn't release it, they'd get blamed for some idiot who deliberately configured 512 DHE keys in their environment.

My Win XP SP3 machine is connected to the Internet ususally for several hours per day, at least.
I’m on a dial-up line which is why I don’t do updating. Updates can take hours to download.
Fortunately, I’ve had no trouble with bad guys, viruses or malware. I’ve thought part of that could be it takes too long to download the bad stuff at 56K :)
Scary thing is, a lot of people at home do exactly that. Hook their one computer up directly to the cable or DSL modem, no NAT router or firewall.
Luckily the past few years, it's become more standard practice for ISPs to install a NAT router (typically because they want wireless), so there's at least the possibility that the computer won't have its little legs spread for everybody out there to plug away at.
But even so, the teenager playing games will open up ports or move the machine's LAN IP to the DMZ and lose all the protection.

There's probably truth to that. Generally speaking these days a dial-up line doesn't get assigned a public IP address, so you're somewhat more protected from direct attack.
Of course, when the teens are here, they pretty much get whatever they want on the net... It just has to be me opening the ports. They love it because I do the heavy lifting for them.
And I get to watch exactly what is going on.
Boy teen sorta freaked out when he found out that I knew everything going across my net... I didn't leave him hanging for too long. He's not looking at anything weird, so he's safe. ;)
