When an event occurs that disrupts everyday life and your trusty smart phone becomes a brick, dont be left deaf, dumb and speechless. If you dont think the cell phone networks are fragile then you need to think again. We have become so dependent on communication that without it, most level-headed people would lose their minds. As commo people, we need to think of ways to keep our team on the up and up. Not all of us are radio nerds so we also have to think of the other guys.
REQUIREMENTS:
SOLUTION: Citizen Band Radio (Jungle Telegraph)
Now, before some of you roll your eyes..... Yes, CB is the answer. ...

GMRS is good , but side band CB is better (longer distance)
Most people forget that during the Bundy ranch showdown, the FEDGovt.closed down the cellphone towers (no communication/ coordination, no facebbok, no twitter, etc.).
In that case , CB sideband (no license needed) is your friend (20-40 miles; 60 miles if 'goosed').
The regional information is only as good as your ability to "reach out, and comunicate", not even allowing for the oportunity to 'skip',depending on atmospheric conditions.
Thanks for info on CB Sideband, TIK. Need to look into that too. How is that different from regular CB? What kind of product would I be looking for? I was looking at these units that are cb in hand held form. Seemed affordable and useful.
Regular CB is 40 channels. That is how the older CBs started out.
The Sidebands allow additional channels of communication not obtainable on older units, and feature triple or more channels of communication.
It is like the difference between a telephone modem(CB) versus telephone modem on the internet(CB sideband);both are good, but one is much better, & offers more opportunity.
As stated in the article, garage season is on now, as is Craigslist, which also lists garage sales, and used units can be had inexpensively.
A magnetic mount antenna can be used both at home, as well as on a vehicle, and makes communication mobile .
Cool! Thanks!
