Avengers: Age of Ultron has message for cybersec about militarizing the Internet

The new Avengers movie is great and manages to include messages about the surveillance state, NSA-like projects, our fear of AI superintelligence, and even a warning for the cybersecurity community.

Prior to its May 1st U.S. debut, Avengers: Age of Ultron amassed $201.2 million across 44 countries. During its preview night in the U.S., Ultron made $27.6 million; on its first day, Disney reported the movie made $84.46 million. I highly recommend seeing it for pure enjoyment purposes, although you might get struck with tech lust after seeing Tony Stark's toys. Some folks who have seen the movie say it's about the surveillance state, NSA-like projects, or our fear of AI superintelligence, and that it even has a message for the cybersecurity community.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier served as a reminder that even our superheroes must fight for freedom by fighting against surveillance. When asked if Avengers: Age of Ultron builds upon the "theme of anxiety about a surveillance/security state run amok," Mark Ruffalo, the actor who portrays Bruce Banner, aka the Hulk, said, "Yeah."

In fact, according the New Yorker's Richard Brody, the new Avengers movie is really about the NSA. The film is writer/director Joss Whedon's "reaction against the long trail of post-9/11 governmental machinations and grand NSA-like projects."

I keep hearing that fusion or solar power is only 20 years away. I really have my doubts about that.
But AI? Massive automation at all levels of production? Untold abilities of the government to know way too much about you? The next 10-20 years are going to be really disruptive. I don't think anything can stop it from coming.

I dunno. I kind of liked Avengers 1. Especially all the scenes where Black Widow appears. :)

Given the relatively low general intelligence of this civilization, I see AI as having a real chance.

I think corporate interests are slowing the development of fusion power, especially home fusion plants. Massive automation is a given, but developing AIs is not something we should be working towards at this point since control would be a major problem.

I think something like The Hunger Games scenario is entirely too possible, and I am waiting for someone to create a CWII movie or a religious war scenario since the jihadists are telling us over and over again that they fully intend to expand their sectarian wars into the western hemisphere until we are subjugated or destroyed outright -probably with nukes.

Which would also probably bring about a Hunger Games event.

“Movie felt like it was the exact same as Avengers 1!”

Like Avengers 1, I slept through half of it.

I enjoyed the movie, however my son and my friend both fell to sleep (10 pm showing). The movie has a lot of action and was actualy entertaining, and pausable. Well worth watching at a theater if you love movies.

Oh by the way, watching a movie on a 65" or computer screen is not anything like it was intended for viewing at the Theater, period.

Agreed. However, it's certainly cheaper and I can watch at my leisure.
