I keep hearing that fusion or solar power is only 20 years away. I really have my doubts about that.
But AI? Massive automation at all levels of production? Untold abilities of the government to know way too much about you? The next 10-20 years are going to be really disruptive. I don't think anything can stop it from coming.

Given the relatively low general intelligence of this civilization, I see AI as having a real chance.

I think corporate interests are slowing the development of fusion power, especially home fusion plants. Massive automation is a given, but developing AIs is not something we should be working towards at this point since control would be a major problem.

I think something like The Hunger Games scenario is entirely too possible, and I am waiting for someone to create a CWII movie or a religious war scenario since the jihadists are telling us over and over again that they fully intend to expand their sectarian wars into the western hemisphere until we are subjugated or destroyed outright -probably with nukes.

Which would also probably bring about a Hunger Games event.
