Soon, new cars in Europe will automatically call police in a crash

Beginning March 31, 2018, all new vehicles sold in the European Union will be required to carry an emergency call system that automatically dispatches assistance to the scene of a crash.

The "auto SOS" system, dubbed eCall, was approved by European Parliament yesterday after two years of debate over privacy concerns, reports BBC News. In the event of a crash, the device calls the E.U.'s 911 equivalent (112) and transmits to authorities important information including location, time, and number of passengers in the vehicle. An in-car button will also be installed in all vehicles. The eCall requirement will add an estimated $100 to the price of a car.

Each year nearly 26,000 people are killed in the E.U. by car crashes. This new device is estimated to reduce that number by 10 percent, saving 2,600 lives annually, by cutting down emergency response time by as much as 60 percent.

An open mic in your car for police to surreptitiously listen, or a call to the police if you speed or drive without a seatbelt? Nooo thanks...

Soon all cars in Obamanation will monitor whether you are speeding, drinking, driving more than your allocated miles, using over your carbon limit for the month, or are a licensed gun carrier and notify the appropriate authorities.

Just wait until the time when you are speeding or get caught by a short red light and you car prints you a ticket out of the dash.

That’s if the pre-drive breathalyzer and the computerized check to make sure you’ve paid you vehicle taxes let you crank the car.

My last three cars have had that feature,However, they didn’t call he police, they called a response center which could, under serious crcumsances, send an ambulance.I had an accident in one of those cars and they came on in about 30 seconds.Turns out I didn’t need them to send anyone thankfully.

There are times when you don’t want the police to intervene immediately. Some car accidents are very straight forward, someone ready to admit some degree of fault, and both parties having insurance. If one or both cars are still operable, and no one was seriously injured, then move away. I’ve seen drivers move away from that spot so they won’t keep blocking traffic. Some folks will exchange contact info with the intention of writing a personal check for the damage they just caused. This is done when you don’t want an accident showing up on your insurance record..

A solution in search of a problem. Anyone who travels frequently to the EU (I do quite often) will notice that there is a cop every 1/2 mile. Country roads, city roads, highways, side streets, main streets, dead end streets, they are everywhere...

More and more I just want to get a nice 1960s car without anything electronic on it. I wonder how much it would cost to get an "unsafe at any speed" Corvair like my dad drove.

Way back in the original "I Am Legend" novel by Richard Matheson, the protagonist drives an International Harvester Scout across the post-apocalyptic landscape. Says parts are easy to find, and he can fix anything on the vehicle to avoid being stranded at night when the vampires come out.
