Microsoft has released preview Build 10074 of Windows 10 at its Build developer event in San Francisco.
It is only a week since the previous preview build (10061) arrived, but this one is a milestone available even to users who prefer to stick with the more stable releases – the “slow” update cycle in Windows Insider terms. This also means you can get an ISO image for a clean install.
Windows 10 is set for release this summer, according to Microsoft, with AMD CEO Lisa Su letting slip that it may be done by the end of July. Not long to go, then.

I’m enjoying the Tech Previews, but had all kind of trouble getting 10049 and 10061 installed! It looked like they were going backwards for awhile...
10074 may go a little smoother, given that there is already an ISO for it, rather than going through Window Update.
It’s called “Technical Preview” for a reason.
DON’T use it for anything critical.
Took me several days and several attempts before 10061 would load, but once it did, it runs just fine. Seems that there are as many different installation woes as there are users!
As an IT guy I cannot really say that, but I would say that MS should do what apple does with Mac, which is leave the GUI the way it is and some other small things, maybe give an option to change it, but just work on the background, that would be better than constantly changing things that do not need to be touched.
But, it is broke. I am running Win 7 Pro on my home desktop and have had to rebuild the OS twice due to patches being pushed from MS via Dell, cannot even use a restore point. Frustrating to the point of tossing the whole damn thing, except I would have to buy a new one...
What is it about MS products that require a patch every week? Is their s/w that bad? I do not recall Win 3.1 ever having this many issues...
is there ANY way to have the classic windows 98 look and start menu? Or are we forced to have the crappy ‘updated’ looks/desktops? I’ve got windows 7 right now and have been able, with some hacks, to get the old windows 98 classic look for menus and desktop and start menu etc- and IE-
IF not- then it’s a shame they don’t make this option availab le to those of us who don’t like the new look-

To prevent this in the future=- get rollbackrx- it’s much more powerful than system restore- and WILL revert your drive if an update, virus, Trojan etc ruins your computer on you- I never have to worry about something messing my computer up-

I also understand that there will be no way to add a flyout control panel to the start menu any longer too? We’ll be forced to go to the crappy window GUI version of control panel- too confusing- the flyout has everything listed alphabetically- easy to find what you are looking for without going through submenus etc- bing bang boom done-
Don’t know why they have to keep messing with crap- making MORE work, more confusion, more relearning-
Took me forever to get windows 7 to where I liked it again- had to find hacks for several different aspects , always risky-
Just give us a true windows 98 classic look CHOICE for our windows and IE and folders etc- and don’t ‘combine them’ with the new look- MS is creating a true Frankenstein monstrosity- I don’t want eye candy, I want a nice clean minimalist look and I want it to remain that way without being changed every couple of years- please-! I don’t want to have to keep searching for workarounds just to get the look and functionality I want-
I’m running the TP on a ‘Retired’ XP machine, which proves that 10 runs well on some older hardware, and doesn’t risk anything important. (as if I did anything important...)
it works before windows loads by simply hitting the ‘home’ key as the omputer begins to boot up(and also works once windows loads if you want) and when it works before windows loads, it means it will work before the virus or whatever messes up your computer making it impossible to get to soemthign like system restore- with rollbackrx, northing has booted yet, so the problem caused by the virus won’t prevent you from getting to your rollbackrx snapshots- you choose the snapshot before windows loads, and it will load that snapshot with no problem- and you are back up and running-
Like I said, it’s system restore on steroids- it’ been a fantastic program that allows me to try all these different things, programs etc without fear of corrupting my system
There’s also something called sandboxing where your computer runs in a virtual environment, and if your computer gets corrupted, it’s just the virtual part that gets corrupted, and you simply delete that environment- not exactly sure how it works, but I’ve always had good luck with rollbackrx so never tried sandboxie-
Rollbackrx will cause a tinty performance hit o nthe computer- but barely noticeable,and you will have to periodically delete some snapshots and defrag your snapshots (all from within the program itself) to free up the space it takwes up- the snapshots are huge- but I keep only about 8 snapshots- the first one beign right after clean install of windows and updates etc- then progressive snapshots like whenever I install programs and like them- I’ll do a snapshot- that way I won’t lose it if I do a rollback to that point
you will lose recent changes to your computer (like if you wrote a thesis or charts or whatever) if you do a rollback, BUT you can retrieve individual files after you’ve done a rollback to a point in time before you wrote the charts or whatever you were working on- so that’s not an issue
Bottom line is I won’t run a computer without rollback on it any more- I never ever have to worry about viruses- about going through my computer to find left overs from viruses, about downloading removal tools for viruses, or about me doing something unknowingly that might mess my computer up like hacking my registry so bad that computer won’t load- or whatever- a couple of clicks, and my computer is back up and running with NO trace of the virus at all and no going through all my computer files to find all the remnants of a virus- no need for it- as all the files are gone because my computer is reverted completely to a time BEFORE the virus hit
LOL I do the same thing -- brain damage the UI back to Win 2000 Classic look and feel.
Unfortunately, we're screwed for the future -- Microsoft hates that we do that, and has made it impossible unless you get a third-party package of some sort, and they have other issues of non-compatibility with certain applications, etc.
Ultimately the only choice may be to convert to another operating system that gives you more of what you want in a UI. Linux and OSX both have their adherents... But there we verge off into religious arguments... I don't go there. :-)
