The Plan to Speed Up Baseball
The Wall Street Journal ^ | APRIL 3, 2015 | MATTHEW FUTTERMAN

As the 2015 Major League Baseball season dawns, the lords of baseball are asking for our forgiveness. They want a second chance, and to get it they are making changes that could shake the game to its foundations.

This isn’t about tinkering with the playoffs to make a few extra dollars from the television networks. The 30 team owners have ordered the new commissioner to modernize baseball and make it appeal to an audience that is increasingly weary of the game’s slow pace. There will of course be cries of sacrilege from traditionalists about putting the national pastime on a clock. Many players are resisting, too. But they are unlikely to slow the transformation.

OK..it is slower than football, hockey, or basketball, but i like it that way.

It’s elegant.

My only complaint is the fact that the season is just too long. By the time they get to the playoffs everybody is playing with some kind of injury.

All they have to do to speed up the game is to cut down the time between innings for commercial breaks.......not going to happen, though.

Baseball, when I used to follow a favorite team avidly (the contending White Sox of the mid-fifties) was exciting despite the “slow pace.” A close game built up tension that only increased, because the deliberate pace of the game allowed it to do so.

Walk up music and music in between pitches needs to go.

OK...I can understand that. The World Series used to be in early October, but it seems to be getting later and later in the year.

And they will have to plow Fenway Park for Opening Day!

There is nothing like a long summer afternoon at fenway park, drinking beer, eating hot dogs, and actually being able to follow the game!

I know. I’m just an old fashioned girl.

There is a lot more going on in baseball than is obvious.

It really is a thinking mans game.

To speed it up? One ball one strike. Five innings.

The average age of a postseason viewer is now about 55 years old

We used to smuggle transistor radios into school to listen to the World Series games during class. Young kids can't stay up that late now to watch the games. The killed the fan-base feed stock years ago. Soccer is boring but at least there is almost continual action.

Another cool thing about baseball is that its a generational thing. During the summer my great grandmother always had “My Tigers” on the TV or radio. My great grandfather probably watched Ty Cobb play when he was growing up in Detroit.

My dad sitting in the car listening to Ernie Harwell calling the game on the radio.

The World Series is now played in November and and the final hockey games are being played within weeks of Independence Day. Baseball season ought to be over by Halloween and ice hockey needs to be over by the summer solstice.
