Benefits and welfare schemes are often blamed for making people less likely to want to work. But a study has found that the opposite may be true. A Europe-wide survey of 19,000 people revealed that the more a country paid to the unemployed or sick, and invested in employment schemes, the more likely its residents were to want a job.

The model for their study is under serious suspicion!!
Were the respondants.aka participants PAID ....i have to wonder??
The study seems to defy common sense. There is no obvious reason countries with less benefits should be less desiring of work.
But I think the common claim that people would rather draw unemployment benefits than work is also false. Most people want a good job and want more pay than unemployment. But they will do what is necessary to protect them and their families. And in an uncertain job market if that means applying for disabilities so be it.
We need to bring an abundance of jobs back to the economy. Only that will provide a sense of stability and draw people back into the labor force.
lol
I will accept the study’s findings if anyone will pay me my current salary to stay home.
To quote an infamous republican congressman; “YOU LIE!!!”
“A study” = SCIENCE!!!
Get ready to have this “study” become holy scripture at MSNBC.
People who are paid better wages are more likely to eye other investments such as rental properties, starting a second business and the like and generally be more entrepreneurial inclined.
There is definitely an entrepreneurial sub-class among those getting government checks as well. However, the nature of that entrepreneurial drive usually translates into different kinds of business ventures such as turning EBT cards into cash, peddling drugs and making pressure cooker bombs for the next Boston Marathon.
It is amazing how much entrepreneurial spare time is generated when you don't have to spend your income on mundane things like commuting, food and housing.
I’ll volunteer to test it for them. Have them send me, oh, I dunno, a coupla grand a day for doing nothing and just watch how eager I am to leap into the most strenuous labor! Of course, the effect might take a few years to come to full fruition but I’m a patient kind of guy...
I think Germany makes people work in the sex industry.
"Wanting" a job and "getting" a job are completely different propositions. I want a job where I don't do anything and get paid $1 million a week, but just wanting it won't make it happen. I REALLY want a new president, but that doesn't mean it's going to happen.
And this isn't even quibbling over the meaning of "is".
Absolutely. How many municipalities and counties no longer have funds for the most basic of upkeep in public spaces? Things like mowing, picking up trash, cleaning public facilities? Welfare recepients could do these jobs instead of sitting on the sofa all day watching ‘Jerry Springer’. In taxpayer funded handouts, they take home more than some of the taxpayers funding their slothful lifestyle. At least they could be semi-productive members of society.
Who am I kidding? Not going to happen. Too many would pull out their tattered old race card and wave it around. How dare anyone expect them to do an honest day’s work.
Exactly.
I’ve never believed that welfare is a life of Riley, it is in fact loaded with paperwork, income limits, and of course, it is still (rightly) stigmatized. It’s also something though, that is needed if someone’s life collapses and they need something to keep them from being homeless while they restructure their lives.
Once we have jobs and stability (political stability as well) then people will get a job, train, leave the dole behind.
We could have them doing those jobs, but instead our elites are bringing in Mexicans to do the jobs, but regrettably Mexicans are going on welfare and lazing around.
Clearly designed to make the euros feel good about their welfare state. That’s probably why their collective economy has been in the crapper for two decades as well.
Who makes this crap up?
Do they really think anyone believes this stuff?
“I think Germany makes people work in the sex industry.”
I think there is possibly a very funny movie in that statement.
... and carts push horses LOL!
Countries with higher work participation can afford to pay more benefits than countries with high unemployment.
Obviously.
