When retired priest Neil Richardson, 69, moved to Braintree, Essex he was constantly greeted by complete strangers who insisted on calling him John.

Baffled by their persistence, Mr Richardson thought nothing of it until some time later the reason for the confusion became apparent.

John Jemison, 74, a retired headteacher is the spitting image of Mr Richardson and lives just miles away.

When the doppelgangers finally bumped into each other, they even discovered that they has attended the same college and had both worked as religious knowledge teachers.

Mr Richardson, 69, said: "Complete strangers were coming up to me and saying hello.

They have to be related somehow. Twins or parallel genetics. Many true siblings don’t look that much alike.

That’s what I was thinking.

Maybe they should hire somebody to look into their heritage; they might find they are related in some way.

Amazing.

Who is #1?

You are #6.

Or is it: you are, #6.

I have had this happen to me. I once swore I saw my older brother and had to almost talk to this gentleman to satisfy me he wasn’t my brother. My wife also claims she once saw my body double.

They may be secret half-siblings, or even full siblings where the older one was put up for adoption.

This happened to me about 15 years ago. People kept calling me “Milan” and were amazed to learn that I wasn’t “Milan.” So I got his number, called him up, and invited him to lunch. It really was funny how he looked just like me. The waitress thought we were brothers. He was a Serb expatriate, by the way. I’m of purest Irish ancestry, so there was no apparent genetic relatedness (the Irish are all related if you go back about seven generations). He was a good guy, too.

One day I was exercising at the gym and saw two men who were talking to each other, and - tho they were easily as similar in appearance as the two in the photo, they insisted that they weren’t related at all.
