New Jersey Throws It Into Reverse, Welcomes Tesla

Last year, New Jersey’s state legislature told Tesla its selling style wasn’t welcome. But now, Elon Musk’s electric car company is back in the Garden State’s good graces.

On Wednesday, Gov. Chris Christie signed a bill that allows Tesla to sell cars directly to consumers, Bloomberg reported. The move is part of a bill that overhauls the state’s automobile franchise laws.

Under the new law, Tesla has to meet some criteria, such as maintaining a service center in New Jersey where the electric vehicles can be fixed.

...

But Texas lawmakers have refused to let the company sell directly to consumers, seen by some experts there as a reason why Texas did not get the Gigafactory. It also cannot sell directly in Michigan, Virginia and Arizona.

Good news, in my opinion. I have to say thought that the requirement for a service center is kind of silly, because that is exactly what Tesla wants to do and has done in other states where it is allowed.

Nothing screams louder of crony capitalism than franchise dealerships. If manufacturer could, the would replace the entire lot. Do dealers really ad value? After warranty consumers don't give a hoot about the dealer.

Car dealers and insurance agents are extremely well represented in state legislatures. That keeps them economically robust.

And don't forget real estate agents. Think about it, how many industries with so many competitors can all charge 6% and not be accused of price collusion? With the inflation in the housing market far exceeding other inflation, it is hard to imagine that not one broker decided to cut rates to attract more listing.....

Attorneys also price collude.

What happened? Did the check from the incumbent car dealer lobby bounce?

I would only say that this was probably stipulated to silence the idiots who would object to airect dales based on this one issue alone. As you stated, it wasn’t a deal killer because it fit the Tesla model. It just more or less took an arguing point away. That’s probably a sensible thing to do.
