Families outraged that their family’s headstones are being used as part of a retaining wall

Peggy Matheson, 82, is furious that a gravestone with her parents’ names on it is being used to prop up a pile of dirt next to a grimy, semi-industrial parking lot in East Vancouver.

“It just gives me goose bumps of anger. It’s about my parents, you know,” Peggy said in a phone interview from Campbell River.

The marble gravestone of Matheson’s parents — Margaret Jane Lipp (1914-2005) and Albert Charles Lipp (1913-1976) — is among eight tombstones recently found near the corner of Commercial and Powell streets.

The unceremonial use of the gravestones was discovered this week by Al Macgillivray.

Wondering if the eight tombstones had been possibly stolen, or were sold-off discards, he notified the Sun because he was upset that “somebody’s decided to use these gravestones to hold up a crummy piece of dirt.”

I don’t think they’re headstones until they’re placed in the cemetery. Until then, they’re just a carving yard’s scraps and mistakes.

The Nazis paved roads with Jewish tombstones...

I guess we have not learned too much.

I never knew that about those Nazi bastards! How awful.

This is a disgrace. I’d go mad to know my father’s tombstone was anything but what it is.

Or that his precious name was on some “reject”. Hope it happens to the people who did this.

I concur that it is in poor taste and judgment. It would be easy to ‘erase’ the names and dates if a family wanted to go through the legal means to do so.

I myself will not have a grave. My will states my grave be the Wasatch Range.

My family’s headstones from the early 1800’s were buried under an addition to the church. One is for my 5th great grandfather who was a Revolutionary War soldier. I got a new headstone from the VA for him placed in the cemetery.

Where were the graves. My family, both sides, are from the Accomack co. area. There are lots of graves unaccounted for.

With the Pro-Regressives in power and QE Unlimited we are well on the way to becomming a certain European country ala. the 1930’s....

Now all we need is a Charismatic Leader from the left to swoop in and complete the transformation into a police state and we are all set...... to become the world’s next great Pro-Regressive Fascist evil...

Where did the decent german citizens that left the emerging Statist German state in the 1930’s emmigrate to?

The stone pictured is jet black granite not marble and it is new not old. If the stone used in the wall is marble then the family bought the new granite stone to replace the (inferior) marble one. The Dealer would have asked them if they wanted the old stone. If they said no it is his to do with as he pleases. It cost him money to have removed from the bone yard. Dealers yards are full of old removed grave markers. Who ever reused the stone probably thought it looked ‘quaint’ or some damn thing with the inscription showing. I recall a story a few years ago wherein somebody was strolling along a jetty and spotted their dads (former) tombstone. Hilarity ensued.

Several years past, my mother took a trip "home", one of her goals was to visit her grandparents graves. They'd been buried in a very old cemetery next to which a new, much needed, hospital had been built.

What she found was a helicopter pad.

Apparently one cousin had said OK...according to the hospital. Besides, they'd they'd thoughtfully leaned the stones up against the hospital wall and opined that "old Pat would have approved".

Mom sure didn't approve.

PS: I don't think the VA would have helped, old Pat was on the other side.

When the Ottoman Empire controlled Jerusalem, they used the grave stones from the Jewish Cemetery on the Mount of Olives to build latrines.

Yes.

They REALLY did do that.

Grrrrrr
