The Tueller drill principles has been taught to Cadettes and seasoned Officers/Agents throughout law enforcement nation wide, includes agencies such as the FBI and DEA. The objective is sound for teaching to a wide variety of skill level and to retain it quickly. You can view some of our past article on Tueller drill here.
But, what if the gun fighter was at an elite level in terms of competency and skills thats off the chart like G.I. Joe. (no pun intended) The video below highlights two extremely skilled in respective arts. (knife, gun) See the rest of elite gun fighter against a knife fighter here.
That’s nothing. I’d take them both out with a spoon.

The key word here is “elite”. I’m pretty damned good but I’ll live by Tueller.
Cool video tho. Thanks for posting it.

He makes a great point about not showing your weapon until it can be used.
Somebody stated that you will return to the level of training you have received.
This video demonstrates that either person, with either style of weapon, can be at the disadvantage, at a particular moment, which means that the average ‘schmo’ (me, too), could have a bad day, even after the expense of all that money, travel, and time invested at a firearms training facility.
Now, put in background noise, eyeglasses, hearing aids, headphones, cell phones, and ‘monkey-mindedness’ - instead of ‘mindfulness’, and what do you have?
Heck I’d take them both out with a banana.
I’d use a tea cup. /Riddick reference
Elite gunfighter wins.
Most thugs and cops are not “elite.”
I am damn good with a knife, but I have friends who could shred me with a gun, a knife, or even unarmed. Easily. Glad they’re my friends!
My one armed encounter was a ‘knife to a gunfight’ type situation. Luckily he unassed the area when I cordially invited him. He’s now in prison for 68 years.
I'll just go by my training: if he displays a knife, shoot him immediately, and keep shooting until he's down and I'm sure he will STAY down.
My only armed encounter. Not one armed.
Was more impressed with your first post. {;^)
I very strongly recommend that unless you are an LEO *expecting* a charge *with* a weapon, Tueller is ridiculously underestimated. Most of us are civilians, and in almost no circumstances will you be expecting *anything*. And a person with a knife is going to try to close the gap before charging.
Before I suggested that most people need 30 feet to effectively draw and fire once they realize they are being attacked with a knife. It may be closer to suggest 50 feet.
If you noted in this video, the knife expert had his knife out *way* before he used it. But it was not seen, the blade hidden behind his forearm. This is a standard technique with a knife.
So what do you do if a person who seems to be unarmed is charging you? Is your first thought to shoot them, or just to brandish?
Every one of us needs to get a friend with a section of broom handle to simulate a knife, and a cap gun. And practice the heck out of this.
This is why in any kind of scenario like this, I would first draw my knife at the slightest inkling of a problem, while concealing its blade. As soon as I do this, the Tueller distance ceases to be a problem. If I can draw, brandish, and fire in time, great.
If I can’t, it’s Poke-é-mon time.
>>Thats nothing. Id take them both out with a spoon.
I prefer a more elite weapon, the titanium spork.
Dangit, you beat me to it.
“You’ll scoop yer eye out, kid.”
LOL, well, it turned out okay.
