Leonardo DiCaprio, one of the most famous actors in Hollywood, has agreed to a partnership with Netflix to produce documentaries for the streaming service.
With the multi-year deal, DiCaprio and his production company "Appian Way" will identify and develop "fact-based" projects focusing on environment and conservation for Netflix.
"There's never been a more critical time for our planet or more of a need for gifted storytellers to help us all make sense of the issues we face," DiCaprio said in a statement Wednesday. "I hope to give documentary filmmakers doing urgent and important work the chance to have their films seen immediately by audiences all around the world."
DiCaprio will serve as a producer or executive producer on all upcoming projects via the partnership.
This won't be the first time the actor has partnered with Netflix.
DiCaprio and the streaming service first worked together on the documentary "Virunga," which spotlighted gorilla conservation.
The film was critically acclaimed and was nominated for Best Documentary Feature at this year's Academy Awards.
DiCaprio is known for his philanthropy and work with protecting the environment.
The actor even spoke at the UN Climate Summit, was named a UN Messenger of Peace, and stood with thousands in New York City's People's Climate March in September.
"Honored delegates, leaders of the world, I pretend for a living but you do not," DiCaprio said to the Summit in September. "The time to answer humankind's greatest challenge is now."
Somehow I don’t expect them to be very fact based in their story telling.
Oh please. All DiCaprio is know for is jumping in the sack with a different supermodel every night and then dumping them the next day. This is going to be a high profile project to promote Leonardo DiCaprio, period.
That's where I stopped reading.
“...projects focusing on environment and conservation...
That’s where I stopped reading.
I stopped at “one of the most famous actors in Hollywood”.
Clint Eastwood CRAPS bigger than him.
May we have DiCaprio’s definition of “Fact” ,please
“fact based”? Let’s see if Oliver Stone or Michael Moore are involved and then we will see the accuracy of that statement.
What’s the big deal? The Powers of Hell control public education, politics, and the media. This latest ploy should come as no surprise to anyone.
No, “humankind’s greatest challenge” is stopping the spread of radical islam you dolt.
I will boycott DiCaprio
Will he begin by filming himself and all of HWood hopping on their own private jets to ski for the afternoon, or walk the red carpet, or ....
No, don’t think so.
Now that baby can really generate some “carbon” LOL
Modest too!
Leonardo is Half Right—we need more story telling and better story telling-—but we have real problems that are greater than Global Warming (if it even exists). To name a few: ISIS, Religious Hate, Famine, plagues like Ebola, War as in Ukraine, Corruption, Child soldiers, health problems. etc... BUT if he really wants to make pictures try these ideas:
1. A film on Mother Triesa (Sp?) of India. To teach love of man
2. A feature on Oscar Wilde to to teach gays are human.
3. A story on the Christians who gave their lives to save Jews and Jewish children.
4. A film on Latinos and the winning of the west.
5. A film on the Rape of Nanking—mans inhumanity.
6. A feature on Hungarian Revolt in the 1950s.
7. A feature on Father Daimaem of Hawaii and his work with the Lepers—until he caught the disease.
Didn’t you know that yacht is run on solar, wind, bio, and small Filipino boys with oars.
I really want to get my “facts” from that ahole, not!
Nothing but an incredibly wealthy celebrity can bring legitimatcy to a concern. Ever since Sharyl Crow told me to only use one square of toilet paper my life has been changed. And now i hear how I need to cut back my mindless consumption from a man who liesures himself on a 480 ft yacht. Next Kanye West will lecture us on the virtue of humility.
Fauxmentaries.
I have no intention of being spoon-fed liberal propaganda by Leonard di Caprio.
Netflix thinks it will find an audience. I predict it will flop.
