Ive seen many articles on ARs, but few on cleaning. Over the last few years, there have been numerous tools introduced to facilitate easier cleaning of the bolts and carrier groups and I wanted to compare them side by side to see if they worked and if they worked, how well? I called Brownells (who else) and promptly received a package which included:
I have the Otis B.O.N.E.. Works well.
I have a nice little mil-spec cleaning kit that works well.
I like piston drive and some Hoppes # 9.
Hoppes # 9 is also my aftershave.
Love the “Infidel” on his rifle.

Dude has pizazz...
Never tried it for aftershave, it makes lousy mouthwash.

Prefer my Kalashnikov—not picky at all about dirt, and a bigger caliber.
Beats the heck outta WD-40 for rheumatism and the gurls really like the aromatic aura.
I’m with you.
Cleaning a Kalashnikov all you need is to piss down the barrel, throw it in a river, then a knotted shoestring and some motor oil.
No fancy equipment.
Although, I do like the 5.45x39 better than either 7.62x39 or the American 5.56. Inexpensive, reliable, and very rugged.
Some things the Russians do very well.
Ancient Chinese Secret for Crappie fishing is WD40.

Looking at the post “source” I thought this was a bit off the usual path for the Wall Street Journal...
Use the Real Avid AR15 scrapper tool myself. Can do a heck of a lot with it and it’s decently compact.

The piston ARs have the same advantages as the AK, still with better accuracy and range (7.62 version anyhow).
That said, the direct impingement ARs aren’t bad at all these days, especially with some of the better powders like TAC. I personally think the best option is the 6.5-6.8mm range of calibers. The 6.5-6.8 wildcat looks very interesting for instance, with 100-125gr bullets being the sweet spot - and useful ranges well beyond 800 meters.
