Anybody who has had a Lab knows they are the definition of Man’s Best Friend. Better than most humans.
We have had the top 3 dogs.
Had a Chocolate lab that loved to chew on my dad’s dresser, she would get into his fishing lure making supplies to get the bottle of cod liver oil and she loved to get into the duck pen. She killed one of our Mallard ducks on accident but learned how to chase and catch the remaining one and just hold it in her mouth and swim in the tub with her for a while. Then she would release her, leave the pen and go about her business. She would do this several times a day. The duck figured out how to just go limp and she would be fine. I miss her still after 22 years. The cat missed her too and died a few months after she did. He would get into the cookie jar to get her some cookies. She never grew out of her puppy stage.
The GS was my grandmas but she couldn’t handle him. We had Shane for a while then gave him to a cop in Dade City Florida. Sadly some scum bags killed him execution style and did a Colombian necktie. He was a good dog and didn’t deserve that.
Had a Golden given to us in 2004. She died in 2011 and I miss her everyday. She was still a puppy occasionally and would chew. She also had a cat but he died in 2009. She missed him for several months afterwards.
Eventually I want another Golden and lab. Right now have a long haired miniature dachshund my sister dumped on us a few weeks after the Golden died. My mom also has a mutt she adopted but I seem to be the one that takes care of them both. I prefer the bigger dogs.
All of my Labs love their kennels (but sleep with us at night in bed) and love going to training classes. We have a great trainer though!!! We always did multiple levels of training too. The socialization in class helps to teach them to be calmer when around other dogs and teaches you what to expect and how to react to different situations. I always use braunschweiger as the treat for class as our trainer uses food as motivation along with a tennis ball or toy or a good rub to say “good job”. We also do different types of hand signals- like a thumbs up reassures them from afar they are doing a good job.
Enjoy her while she’s little though- the years fly by before you know it!
That’s who we went to for both the dogs we have now. We did find that the quality of the individual trainers varied greatly. The first one we had was a waste of time and the one we had for intermediate very good. So for the second dog we made sure to schedule with the good one. Best of luck.
That's how you rear a dog
A dog just wants to love you ... MORE than like a child because as a dog grows up, he doesn't question your authority ... just loves you IN SPITE of the fact you didn't get him his treats this week, or you got home late and drunk and didn't pay any attention to him
All y'gott'a do is LOVE him ... and you will KNOW what a man's best friend is
He'll learn the "NO!" and "sit" and the rest of it just by BEING with you and you always say "wait a minute" (or anything else) when you come to a street crossing ... or you just got home
Consistency of command and follow up is the key to an obedient dog ... or in OUR case ... child.
My comment above about the vacuumn cleaner cord is a true story .... about 20 feet of two inch pieces and the biggest, goofiest smile you can imagine
I hated to discipline him (I'm guessing about 4 to 6 months), but I had to
The next day and forever more a most loveable dog ... until the next time when he discovered our crocks
Nice, firmly soft and chewable two inch pieces and the same goofy smile
Y'jes' gutt'a LOVE 'em
Yes they are. I just came in from playing in the snow with my one year old black Lab. She will chase a ball on a rope forever. Great family dog!
I’ve had two Blacks and a Yellow. Pretty sure a Chocolate is next. I’m sure there’s a shelter Lady Lab who needs a Mama.
I also have a Basset Hound - Oh, Boy! Never again. Stubborn as an old mule! :)
