Indiana may allow 'baby boxes' for surrendering newborns
Yahoo News / AP ^ | 2-27-2015 | JENI O'MALLEY

On the outside, the metal box looks like an oversized bread container. But what's inside could save an abandoned newborn's life.

The box is actually a newborn incubator, or baby box, and it could be showing up soon at Indiana hospitals, fire stations, churches and selected nonprofits under legislation that would give mothers in crisis a way to surrender their children safely and anonymously.

Indiana could be the first state to allow use of the baby boxes on a broad scale to prevent dangerous abandonments of infants if the bill, which unanimously passed the House this week, clears the state Senate. Republican state Rep. Casey Cox and child-safety advocates say they're unaware of any other states that have considered the issue at the level Indiana has.

Cox says his bill is a natural progression of the "safe haven" laws that exist in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Those give parents a legal way to surrender newborns at hospitals, police stations and other facilities without fear of prosecution so long as the child hasn't been harmed.

Many children, however, never make it that far. Dawn Geras, president of the Save the Abandoned Babies Foundation in Chicago, said safe haven laws have resulted in more than 2,800 safe surrenders since 1999. But more than 1,400 other children have been found illegally abandoned, nearly two-thirds of whom died.

Is it racist that the box is black? Shouldn’t it be rainbow colored to honor the homos that can never have kids?

Get with it, people. What's needed is an app to go with the dropbox: iDumpMyBaby.

For the more conventional among us, a network of Obama Birthing Centers where, once the babies are delivered and microchipped, the state can invoke one of Dr. Emanuel's algorithms for "allocating" him (it) to an approved "family".

The possibilities are endless!

China has had its own version for years, and it’s one reason why Americans adopt from China: no “open” adoptions.

NJ has this already; I think it is called something like the “safe haven” law. While it doesn’t involve boxes, people may dump their unwanted babies in certain places (hospitals, fire stations, etc.) with no questions asked. I don’t think it really took off; it seems “mothers” prefer closure to never knowing what became of their child, and prefer to kill him/her.

Sad...

What a country! if you want to abandon a dog or a cat, you have to find a place that will take it, and pay a fee. If you want to abandon a baby, you can just drop it off, no fuss, no muss, no bother, no fee.

Maybe somebody who knows better can correct me, but I don’t think this is a new concept. During the Middle Ages, they used to have this type of thing at convents and monasteries. I actually believe it’s a good idea, if it saves even one baby’s life.

I agree 100%. For a woman in a tough situation she feels she doesn't control, it's a moral decision to give her preborn child life.

Interesting that the pro-abortion monsters don't advocate this instead of abortion when a mother is late term.

In China, it is illegal and has been illegal to surrender an infant UNLESS the married man was widowed and couldn’t take care of the child. The baby girls (mostly) are secretively placed in boxes where they could be found... busy markets, outside businesses, schools, etc.. The parents (many times) will hide.. a distance away to see the infant is found.

“.. even if it saves one baby’s life”.

Many of these young mothers are fearful of others discovering they had a baby. They give birth in secret. If this saves one infant from being thrown in a river, a trash can, an outdoor porta potty (it happened on the Eastern shore some years back) etc.. than this is a good, good thing.

Absolutely correct.

Their method is more informal. The police know to check certain places when making their rounds.

The upside for adopting parents is all birth parent rights are terminated two weeks after the child’s recovery. They can lay no claim to the child without facing prosecution by the Chinese government.
