The competition was ruff, but it didnt matter: Miss P, 4-year-old beagle extraordinaire, took down all comers at the Westminster Dog Show.
She is a princess, handler Will Alexander told the Associated Press.
But Ps royal bearing didnt prevent her from totally humiliating all members of the species Canis lupus familiaris that dared enter Madison Square Garden to challenge her for Best in Show. Those with their eyes on the prize included a Skye terrier, a standard poodle, an English springer spaniel and a shih tzu owned by former kidnapping victim and pardoned bank robber Patty Hearst.

Congrats to Him!
and that handler seemed to have two left feet ;- )
Snoopy celebrates!
We will leave it, different story about same event
My last beagle probably actually hunted herself to death. They are slaves to their nose. She would actually hunt almost all night. She was beautiful though and never met a stranger. When I came home she could jump in the truck window and clear it with ease even though it was at least four times her height from the ground. She loved to go to town and make the shopping rounds to the feed store, auto parts and such where she got to greet people.
Little but mighty. Full of spirit, cheer and exceptional voice that called out when the trail got hot or when she greeted her people. Not a dog for everybody though.
We kept a tick collar on her as best we could and did the repellent application and checked her daily but she succumbed to tick fever. So completely could she steal your heart the vet stayed with her almost without a break for her last two days. We could not put her down. She was trying so hard to stay. She was not yet three and has been gone for several years.
Read somewhere that of the roughly 200 breeds of dog recognized by the AKC, less than 50 have won “Best in Show” at Westminster. If I’m not mistaken, this is the second win by a Beagle in less than 10 years.
My personal favorite, the Basset Hound, has never won at Westminster. If I’m not mistaken, Bassets have been appearing at the show since 1907, so their run of futility is roughly akin to that of the Chicago Cubs winning the World Series.
Just glad the Standard Poodle didn’t win, or a Golden Retriever. Both are wonderful breeds, but there seems to be a built-in bias, particularly for the Standard. Hardly a year goes by without a Standard Poodle vying for Best in Show in New York.
A cute dog. Of course, I am partial to Border Terriers but that is just me.
I know this isn’t the place for this. Good job for the doggie by the way. I don’t know how you post a story, I’m not too computer literate but I just wanted to share that today I had to put down my cat Scooter. He was my buddy, my boy. Found him fourteen years ago when he was a stray, just a little ball of fur. He was my pal but over the last few years he became sick, he had diabetes, his eye sight was going and he just wasn’t himself. He’s gone now and no longer in pain. I’ll sure miss him.
Uno the beagle won in 2008. I was there for that show.
I was there in 2005 & 2006 too.
My wife has showed against Peyton(Miss P)and Will Alexander multiple times. They are a great team. She/they deserved to win. Although, it was a surprise to most dog show people. The odds on favorite were the Portuguese Water Dog and its handler Mike Scott. Mike Scott has been showing dogs pretty much all his life. He grew up in the sport. His wife has twice won the Best in Show @ Westminster. He has been runner up at least ten times.
Labrador Retrievers have never won the Best in Show @ WKC. They are the number one registered AKC breed. The WKC started with showing “sporting” dogs. That is why their symbol is “The Pointer”. When other breeds started to enter the show they created another group called “non-sporting” as a catch all for every breed that was not considered sporting. Eventually, that became 7 groups: Sporting, Non Sporting, Working, Hound, Herding, Toy and Terrier. It is the second oldest sporting event in the country. Only the Kentucky Derby is older.
Sounds like she was a sweetie. Thanks for sharing your loss...
Labs are proud but dignified and modest animals. They don't need the pomp of the WKC to prove themselves.
That's okay, you'll only find animal lovers on this thread. We've all had to go through it, having an animal put down, it's not easy - I still miss them (but they were dogs of course!). I'm glad there are cat people out there because they need love too.
Thank you ozarkgirl. He was my little buddy but I know he’s no longer in pain and in a better place now.
No trouble. Some critters just get to you. That was one that could brighten just about any gloomy day and make sunny days even better. There have been other good ones over the years. She was exceptional or came at the right time after Dad died.
I read somewhere or maybe heard that Beagles have the widest range of vocalization in dogdom. I will never forget the second day I had my beagle many years ago now he had been silent up until then when a distant ambulance siren was heard and suddenly a very low but slowly rising howl came from him. Shocked me to say the least. From then on throughout his life sirens made him howl.
Isn’t it cool when they do that?
