My aunt & uncle lived there and when I visited them, you could hear them quite clearly.
Too bad. /s
They’re the largest of the pheasants.
Screeching, damaging auto paint with claws and feces...
That does not surprise me in the slightest.
How can anyone give a flying (fornication) when bearded savages are burning people alive?
I had an idiot city dweller move in next to me and file a complaint with the County Sheriff’s dept. Claiming I was making Cat Calls when ever she was outside.
The deputy laughed his arse off when he investigated the claim. Turned out when he drove in our drive our Peacock told on him. :)
Noe on the other hand our 35 Guinees get loud!
We had some friends who lived in that area.
He said the expression “loose as a goose” applied many times over to those peacocks. They were always cleaning their roof...
No joke.
Especially if you’re up there in Palos Verdes and you had one of them tarted-up emus take out the grille on your Maserati.
Some people out here keep them with their ducks, chickens, guineas, etc. They are a good alarm system, too and eat less than a donkey or llama-you get used to the noise-my dog doesn’t even howl back at them. But I’m in BFE-a rural area not a subdivision, and the peacocks are confined like other fowl...
People sell emus here to eat-and those talons could probably take out a human, never mind a grille...
I was going to sarcastically ask if this belonged in breaking news; but you said made the point more forcefully. This thread is assuredly for the birds.
We used to have them too in North Dakota when I was growing up.
Wise-ass buddy sent me into some brush one day during pheasant season, telling me he had seen three or four roosters scratching in there.
Spooked me when I spooked it but I didn’t think it was a pheasant and I didn’t shoot. Looked more like a little old farm wife picking chokecherries.
Anyway the emus went away when the emu marketing pyramid collapsed. Didn’t know they still had ‘em around.
Peacocks = guineas with elaborate, colorful plumage
Guineas can make some noise, too
I like birds, but the owners of these birds should keep them in their own yards.
They love those playing hard-to-get!
The peacocks were let loose their in the 20s or 30s, IIRC, to lend ambiance to the area (and thereby sell real estate). It’s quite charming to drive through the area in the late afternoon and see them walking around or sitting on people’s roofs.
Yes, they are not potty trained and they are loud, but everybody knew that, or should have, when they moved in. And if the population is getting too out of hand, people could collect the eggs. The local 4-h group was at one point accepting eggs, intending to hatch and sell, or something like that.
The guy who is shooting them however... this is not good. It’s a populated area, with kids and horses, etc. He’s going to miss and hit a person or a pet. That’s gotta stop.
I could come and help them Tom’s behave...
