The index that timed the 2008 crash perfectly just slumped to a three-decade low

The Baltic Dry Index just hit a 28-year low. The index drew attention for mapping the financial crisis, going through the floor as the global economy tanked in 2008, but it just slumped to an even lower level. The index measures shipping costs for dry bulk commodities (minerals and metals like coal and iron, as well as grain and other food).

It plunged by more than 90% in just a few months in 2008 as the global crisis unrolled. Then, it was an impressive bellwether for the global situation.

Shipping costs were previously so expensive because demand was strong and enormous cargo ships can't be built overnight. As the demand disappeared, the Baltic Dry dived.

It has now dropped by more than 50% in less than three months.

BS. The US economy is in recovery, Greece is booming, China will regain 10% GDP and markets only go straight up. And besides that Apple just had a blow out water and Obama said austerity kills.

I at no time said we are living less years I said the food we are eating is killing us slowly because it is so loaded with carbs and unsaturated fats that we are getting heart disease and diabetes etc. What I said is we are a very unhealthy nation and more and more people are overweight because we eat too much processed food that has very low real nutritional value.

As brevity is the soul of wit, let me help you out:

Man used to be much healthier, they just didn't live as long.

Here is a hint if you want to prove someone is wrong don't use a source that proves him right.

From your own link 4th paragraph second page: "Until we find a way to get leaner again, we are going to pay consequences in terms of cardiovascular disease and cancers," Lloyd-Jones says. He tells WebMD that Americans need more discipline and must reduce intake of calories and get away from highly processed foods. "What has changed in the past 20 years is not our genes, it's the availability of foods that aren't good for us..." hahahah Thanks for the link!

Ah, foolish me, just as you are unable to grasp that machinery size trends which have lasted for more than a hundred years may continue, so you are unable to grasp the difference between opinions and science facts.

My apologies.

I’m no off for a meal of pork ribs.

BTW, I put the lie to your heart disease thing, give that one a rest.

I do wish to thank you much for that link because it has come in so handy.

"The American Heart Association is proud of the progress this country has made against America's No. 1 single cause of death and the No. 3 killer," says Timothy Gardner, MD, president of the AHA. "But our work is not done, since the major risk factors for heart disease and stroke have not seen the same decline as the death rates, and several are rising.">
If the trend continues, he says, "death rates could begin to rise again in the years ahead." Although patients are working harder to control high blood pressure and high cholesterol and to quit smoking, "progress continues to lag in obesity, diabetes"

And to review I said "Yeah that is why heart disease and diabetes are running rampant in our nation of overweight people. We have lots of processed food is done so using far too much corn and soybeans and that is slowly killing us all."

and again this is from your link: "Until we find a way to get leaner again, we are going to pay consequences in terms of cardiovascular disease and cancers," Lloyd-Jones says. He tells WebMD that Americans need more discipline and must reduce intake of calories and get away from highly processed foods. "What has changed in the past 20 years is not our genes, it's the availability of foods that aren't good for us..." And as anyone can plainly see your link is saying the same exact thing. So thanks for proving my point!

Oh numbers on heart Disease, OK:

Heart Disease Facts

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women. More than half of the deaths due to heart disease in 2009 were in men.

About 600,000 Americans die from heart disease each year—that’s 1 in every 4 deaths.

Coronary heart disease is the most common type of heart disease, killing more than 385,000 people annually.

In the United States, someone has a heart attack every 34 seconds. Each minute, someone in the United States dies from a heart disease-related event.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for people of most racial/ethnic groups in the United States, including African Americans, Hispanics, and whites. For Asian Americans or Pacific Islanders and American Indians or Alaska Natives, heart disease is second only to cancer.

Coronary heart disease alone costs the United States $108.9 billion each year.4 This total includes the cost of health care services, medications, and lost productivity.

Risk Factors

High blood pressure, high LDL cholesterol, and smoking are key heart disease risk factors for heart disease. About half of Americans (49%) have at least one of these three risk factors.5

Several other medical conditions and lifestyle choices can also put people at a higher risk for heart disease, including:

Diabetes
Overweight and obesity
Poor diet

Some more numbers for you.

Healthy Diet

Less than 1 percent of U.S. adults meet the American Heart Association’s definition for “Ideal Healthy Diet.” Essentially no children meet the definition. Of the 5 components of a healthy diet, reducing sodium and increasing whole grains are the biggest challenges.
Eating patterns have changed dramatically in recent decades. Research from 1971 to 2004 showed that women consumed an average of 22 percent more calories in that span and men consumed and average of 10 percent more. The average woman eats about 1,900 calories a day and the average man has nearly 2,700, according to the government figures.

Overweight/Obesity

Most Americans older than 20 are overweight or obese. About 155 million U.S. adults – or about 68 percent – are overweight or obese.
About 32 percent children are overweight or obese. About 24 million are overweight and about 13 million – 17 percent – are obese.

Cholesterol

About 43 percent of Americans have total cholesterol higher of 200 or higher. The race and gender breakdown is:
48 percent of Mexican-American men
46 percent of white women
45 percent of Mexican-American women
41 percent of black women
41 percent of white men
39 percent of black men
About 14 percent of Americans have total cholesterol over 240.
Nearly one of every three Americans has high levels of LDL cholesterol (the “bad” kind).
About 22 percent of Americans have low levels of HDL cholesterol (the “good” kind).

High Blood Pressure

About 78 million U.S. adults have high blood pressure. That’s about 33 percent. About 75 percent of those are using antihypertensive medication, but only 53 of those have their condition controlled.
About 69 percent of people who have a first heart attack, 77 percent of people who have a first stroke and 74 percent who have congestive heart failure have blood pressure higher than 140/90.
Nearly half of people with high blood pressure (47 percent) do not have it under control.
Hypertension is projected to increase about 8 percent between 2013 and 2030.
Forty-four percent of African-Americans have high-blood pressure, among the highest rates of any population in the world. Here is the U.S. breakdown by race and gender.
47 percent of African-American women have high blood pressure.
43 percent of African-American men have high blood pressure.
33 percent of white men have high blood pressure.
31 percent of white women have high blood pressure.
30 percent of Mexican-American men have high blood pressure.
29 percent of Mexican-American women have high blood pressure.

Blood Sugar/Diabetes

About 20 million Americans have Type 2 diabetes. That’s slightly more than 8 percent of the adult population, but diabetes rates are growing. In fact, about 38 percent of Americans have prediabetes.
African-Americans, Hispanics/Latinos and other ethnic minorities bear a disproportionate burden of Type 2 diabetes in the U.S.
