The reported theft by Chinese spies of designs for Australia's new warplane, the US-built F-35 Joint Strike Fighter jet, highlights the risk of cyber-espionage, an Australian minister said.
Foreign Minister Julie Bishop also told Sky News she was confident that the US would guard its intellectual property.
She was responding to media reports, citing leaked US documents, of the theft of a huge amount of F-35 data.
Australia has ordered 72 F-35 jets, due to come into service in 2020.
The F-35 is the most expensive defence project in US history. The stealth aircraft, manufactured by US-based Lockheed Martin, was developed at a cost of around $400bn (£230bn), in a process dogged by delays and unforeseen costs.
The US, British and Australian militaries are among the major customers for the jet. Australian and British firms have also been involved in manufacturing parts of the aircraft.
Billion-dollar deal
A report by Australia's Fairfax Media says China stole "many terabytes of data" for the new aircraft, according to documents leaked by Edward Snowden, a former intelligence contractor who worked at the US National Security Agency (NSA).

“...a huge amount of F-35 data...”
Yeah - why anyone would have this on a computer system linked to the outside world is beyond me. They are just asking for it to be stolen.
geez...
That is assuming that it was via the internet and not via an inside operative.
`Terabytes` is a lot of data to move with no-one noticing.
No kidding.
And everyone working on dumb terminals or at least computers with no ability to duplicate to flash, external drive, DVD. etc.
I’m wondering exactly what did they steal — was it the engine designs...the dash set up and electronic capability - or the stealth layout...each has its own risks on finding and discovering vulnerabilities....but yes, a better job of not only identifying outside threats, but the insider ones as well...
Cyber Security is becoming big business right now - not only to find people that want to go in it - but people that are ACTUALLY qualified to be it and come up with positive solutions to secure the data!
...any kid in High School or College that wants a secure job in the future should be going this direction - the problem is - most don’t!
> The reported theft by Chinese spies of designs for Australia’s new warplane, the US-built F-35 Joint Strike Fighter jet...
...only became necessary because Clinton was no longer POTUS.
Maybe I ought to get on the certification horse with Security + (again).....
Security + is is a requirement to get on govt systems...the next biggest one is CEH....
