Is it rated R for the violence only? do you think it would be appropriate for 16-year-olds?
Just bought tickets for the 5:30 showing... hope it’s good.
Let me just say it was freaking weird. Never had a movie experience like that. The silence was sincerely overwhelming.
There’s a lot of cursing in the movie. Lots of mofos and f-bombs and the like. There’s also a lot of taunting language from the SEAL trainers to the trainees, as well as people getting shot by auto- and bolt-action rifle fire. You can gauge your child’s readiness to see the movie. Also, I suggest you talk to your child about the movie afterward and maybe put things in perspective if anything bothered your child about the film. But it’s a film that everyone in America should see. The same goes for Lone Survivor.
LOL! Well they’re not going to give away the action in the movie. Yes, there’s lots of sniping and a variety of 5.56 warfare.
Go to the theater early or buy your ticket online and get there early so you can get a good seat. I heard a couple of people griping that they bought their ticket online but then they show up during the previews and they can’t find two seats together. And yes, the concession stand lines were very long, too, so plan for that.
Mmmmm no. It’s a good movie. But it’s no Patton, Bridge Over the River Kwai, Bridge too Far, Tora Tora Tora, Das Boot, Longest Day... There’s a lot of pretty darn awesome war movies out there.
The f-bomb is used liberally throughout and there are many, in some cases, perverse, jokes with sexual innuendo - but hey, they’re Marines.
I don’t like graphic violence, and that didn’t disturb me too much. It was realistic and not gratuitous. I’ve seen comparable scenes on TV. Dittos for the “bedroom” scenes - pretty tame, really.
Depends on the 16 year old, but in general, I think the lessons the movie teaches outweigh the R rating (and I’m fairly prudish about movies). You could have some great family discussions about this one.
For me, the Russian movie, The Brest Fortress, is the best war movie I’ve ever seen.

watching the closing credits...knowing that its actual footage they are showing, is almost unbearable to watch. Def one of the best ever.
I haven't been to a movie theater since the last century and I don't expect American Sniper to change that, although I do look for ward to the DVD or pay for you.
Since you started a list of great war movies, let's not forget The Longest Day, Bridge Over the River Kwai, The Sands of Iwo Jima, Platoon, Gunga Din, To Hell and Back, and Apocalypse Now.
uh, yeah, there is the odd sniping scene.....
It’s the best war movie I’ve seen. Other movies had me looking at my watch. I loved Patton and The Longest Day but those movies were long and I wasn’t riveted as I was with American Sniper. I will have to check out Kelly’s Heroes.
I loved “Tora,Tora,Tora”.

Agree, Breast Fortress is an awesome movie,
ranks up there with Stalingrad.
Brest Fortress, my mind must have been elsewhere.
