With Republicans in Congress split over the best approach to President Obamas executive amnesty and with many establishment Republicans splitting from grassroots Republicans on the issue of illegal immigration more generally its clear that immigration will be a hot-button primary issue in 2016.
Thats nothing new: Governor Rick Perry of Texas saw his campaign flounder not on his oops moment, but on his proclamation that those who didnt back in-state tuition for illegal immigrants were heartless. But the bases passion on the immigration issue has only escalated thanks to President Obamas precipitous and illegal actions in failing to enforce American border law.
So where do the potential candidates stand? Heres a rundown:
Jeb Bush. While Clint Bolick, a longtime Bush ally and Bushs co-author of Immigration Wars, writes in the Wall Street Journal that Bush is passionately pro-rule of law with regard to illegal immigration, hes fibbing. Heres Bolick in the Journal just two weeks ago:

Well, Cruz hasn’t actually declared that he is interested in running for President, has he? Maybe I missed it. (and Cruz its the only one that I do like of the bunch)
Anyway, I knew a long time ago, that all the others who have shown an interest in running are all amnesty hacks; Some hide it slightly better than others, but they are ALL for it.
Just as I thought: They are all softies but Cruz.
BS
Cruz supports the legalization of those here now illegally.
I don’t plan on taking anything said in the 2016 campaign seriously. I will judge the candidates based on what they have actually done when it mattered. Symbolic bills don’t matter. Rhetoric on the campaign trail doesn’t matter. Voting to defend the border matters. Voting to defend the Second Amendment matters. Voting to weaken Obamacare matters.
Personally, I'm binary on the issue of legalization as I am certain that it will destroy the republic, with finality.
That said, Cruz is tougher and to the right of every other potential candidate.
But I won't vote for anyone who supports Amnesty, I don't care what their position is on any and all other issues.
Where and when did he say this? The article does not say he’s in favor of those who are here staying.
Thanks! There are a lot of fine lines, aren’t there? I’m going to save that Times article.
It was interesting that they mentioned the fact that the Democrats are insisting on citizenship in order to prevent any measure passing, as they know the House would never agree to that.
Of course that was 2013.
